All transmissions up shift back to the highest gear selected at highway speeds that I know of. I would think the computer or throttle position sensor are bad. Many new vehicles don’t have throttle linkage or cable these days. They, like my 2008 Camry have an electric motor that operate the throttle and I notice a delay in throttle response in our Camry. It's the only thing I don't like about it.

Any how IMHO if it doesn’t up shift and return to the to the gear selected there is something wrong. I’d try different Nissan dealer. Personally it sounds like you bought a second hand truck with a problem and the seller will not acknowledge that there is a problem because that may be their financial responsibility.

I’m Sorry that I’m not familiar with the later model transmissions.

Good Luck.. Don S..

I first want to thank you for taking the time to try and
help it means a lot. The car had 39 miles on it , it was
new only has 5,000 on it now. Have gone through 3
dealers and corporate Nissan there is no other in the two
states we are closest to and within 500 miles. They aqre
all in cahots with each other and refuse to admit there
is a problem. We drove another new on the lot 2012
Frontier and it did the same thing. So that being they
are saying its normal.    It will take someone dying
before they do anything or the tranny and motor or both
blowing up. Our warrenty is useless.

I highly recommend to anyone not to buy a Nissan. I have
searched the internet and not just the Frontier but other
models are having transmission problems. In fact there
is still a major issue with the 2002 to 2009 Frontiers
cooling agent going into the transmissions and Nissan is
totally not doing a thing about it and many are losing
their tranny's some as little as 20 miles over the
warranty and Nissan refusing to admit the problem as this
eventually destroys your transmission. So after hundreds
of these obvious malfunctions they will not back their
product I can only imagine the years of horrors people
will face with these transmission problems we are facing.

My worst fear is if they refuse to admit this what will
they do if anything else goes wrong? My hopes are people
will see this and everyone get together and the strength
of all of us can force this awful company to take action.

Even starting this truck the RPM's zoom to at least 2500
rpmw and it admits it in the manual. I have to turn the
key on not to start and you will hear a tick tick from
the electroic fuel pump. Turn it off for about 10 seconds
then turn it on again not all the way hear another tick
.. tick.. then start the c 1500 to 1700. But why should
I have to do that?

I told Nissan Corp that I will not stop on this until I
get some resolution and I won't. It is not right, and
until someone can show us how to get the truck to up
shift without the RPM's going red line no one can tell me
its right..

Thank you again for your continued effort. This being a
Nissan site its a real scary thing for me to say anything
that would encourage someone to purchase this companies
cars.

I have not heard of many Nissan shift patterns problems like yours. And yes I am familiar with the failure of sub contracted transmission cooling cores. Recalls and fixes for manufacturing screw-ups can financially ruin a company. Every single company has these problems. It is appalling that they ALL try to play like it didn’t happen! Been there done that!!!

You might trade your truck in for a ford then park it in the garage then two days later it catches it’s self on fire and burns the house down. I personal know a lady it happened to. In fact Ford put out a buliton that stated”do not park the car in a garage".

Or closer to home we bought a new 1999 Grand Cherokee and had to return it to the dealer 11 times for warrantee work and the rear end was worked on 4 times they and finally the whole thing was replaced the 5th time. Our 1999 Grand Cherokee was on a tow truck hook at 2 weeks old with a bad fuel pump. The window regulators and seat belt retractors had to be replaced. The computer had to be reflashed. At 8000 miles the power steering went out so we sold it off.

On the other hand Our 1999 Frontier has NEVER needed to be worked on and this is also true of 3 Nissan Sentra cars. My mother had a new 1986 Cadillac it was the worst piece of junk we have ever had!

I would get 2 or 3 independent garages to verify your transmission problems then read up on the Lemon Laws and call the BBB.

BTW… If you could find a reputable automatic transmission shop they might be able to find and fix the problem economically. It could be a intermittent wire connection. Also even though the truck was new it is possible it was a flood victim (do a VIN # check) and that can cause numerous problems…

Mercy and Good Luck.. Don S..

Well in the face of bad you got me laughing thanks.
Sadly we don't at this time stand a chance in hell as
Nissans techs have said it not a problem and the other
Frontiers are doing the same thing. Until someone gets
hurt and then have fun proving it was that, nothing will
be done. Our tranny shop good guys said there is not fix
it is the way they built it and even adjusting the
whatever the heck they call that computer that tells it
when to shift does not stop the problem. They did this
to save gas from what I have read but come on people.
when your engine is racing at 5,000 rpms to shift how is
that saving gas and this trucks gas mileage is awful to
begin with. The answer to that one from Nissan dealer
was ... better than it use to be.. LOL

We had our Murano 7 years not one problem , two minor
recalls one a third seatbelt another some switch but we
loved it. Wish we never traded it in.

Since we bought the Frontier with all the bells and
whistles our only hope is to trade it in for a cheaper
new car.   I appreciate your defending Nissan and I would
agree on the cars from Japan but that is not the case
anymore. Our Camery was also from Japan and sold it at
450,000 miles and it ran like new passed smog with flying
colors. It seems like when the USA gets their hands on
these foreign cars they go to crap and saying seems is
optimistically putting it.

I just read at Edmonds some horror stories about Nissan
and of course if I entered another model or make they
would be there also but what is the connection? Well we
can figure it out for ourselves..

Thanks again..
