I've had my 4ci, std 5 spd, 95 reg cab since new and it is now apraching 240k.  Just about all of these miles have been accumulated driving my 100 mi round trip to and from work on hot Houston freeways and I have always done my own maintence at decent intervals (i.e. oil changes @ 3k to 4k, air and fuel filters every 10k etc.).  My question is, I am still running my stock timing chain and clutch, should I consider changing both or either out?  Both appear to be operating fine, so I haven't been too concerned about them, but driving the truck 2 to 3 times / week, 100 mi per trip, I hate to get stuck somewhere.

..

I loved the Hard Body V-6 4x4 KC that I traded in on my Frontier. AS to getting stuck somewhere... Our Brand new '99 Grand Cherokee was on a Tow Hook the first week we had it! Sometimes replacing good old stuff causes a chain reaction of bad things to happen... it's a crap-shoot in my mind.

have a good one... Don S..

That's the great thing about the old KA motors, a real timing CHAIN, not a belt.

The clutch would be a more concern to me than the timing chain.  Not saying it couldn't break, but it takes some drastic wear to ruin them.  Then tensioner tends to give out long before the chain does.  I'm also trying to remember if there was an inspection cover on the transmission for the clutch.

On one hand, my parents have a 90 toyota pickup with almost 300k that has never had anything internal engine work done, still running strong.  On the other hand it is a gamble.

I'd say have the timing belt tensioner replaced, and have the chain measured to make sure it hasn't streched.  And if it's been a really really long time for the clutch have it changed.

sold my 1990 SE V6 when i upgraded to a 2003 Cre Cab.

It had 230,000 miles on it at the time; was back in my old town a few weeks back and it seemed to be running strong. i know it was the same truck due to a little "dent" customization.

very interested to see how many miles are on it now.
