I've been hearing a lot about the failure of the trans cooler inside the radiator allowing trans fluid and coolant to mix on 2005 and newer Frontiers.  This ruins the trans and Nissan apparently is not standing behind it.  Cost can be up to $7000 or more.

Has anyone here experienced this?  If so, what year production was involved?  What was the cost?  I know some are bypassing the radiator cooler and/or putting in a new radiator.  I thought getting some hard data on this would be beneficial.

Boomer,
I've replaced 6 or more for this issue, the larger
dealerships are obviously doing more. It seems to be 07
and 08 if I recall. Other than the mess it makes in the
coolant, the other thing you will experience is the
sensation of driving over rumble strips at a very light
throttle maintaining just over 40 mph. It appears to be
the OD kicking in and out. When we first saw this happen,
I replaced the rad and flushed the coolant system along
with a trans flush(did not replace the trans) as far as I
know it is still OK. After talking to Nissan Tech line,
they want the trans replaced regardless, so that is what
we have been doing. It really makes a mess of the coolant
system and is a pain to get it cleaned out.

I just got a letter in the door from Nissan also extending my warranty on my truck up to 80000 miles instead of 36000 miles.

They will cover cost of repairs, replacement, towing charges if needed. So thats fine by me, there is also is a cooler in front of my core support for the transmission. So if this cools the oil, then whats does the cooler in the radiator do?????

I followed the pipes and it looks to be an external tranny cooler. This leaked on me just right after I buying the truck and there was oil all over the underside of the truck.

The dealership replaced the cooler and then the 2nd time I had to go back as they did not clean up the oil residue and it was on my drive way

Frontierguy, most other posts seem to talk about this as a problem with 05 and 06.  Sounds like it is a common problem and no doubt some bad brass casting (or aluminum) were used to make the trans fluid cooler.

Good news folks I just got a notice from Nissan North America, they are extending the warranty for the radiator assembly for 96 months/80,000 miles.

If you have already spend money for these repairs, go to www.nissanassist.com

or call 18008677669

There is some grey area on this matter, if the rad fails
and destroys the trans in the process, does Nissan pay for
the trans past the normal 5/60 for the trans warranty???
It's great that they extended the warranty on the rad, but
only if they cover the trans with it. Inquiring minds want
to know. If I think of it, I will ask my warranty clerk how
it is handled.

I agree frontierguy, since the powertrain is only warranted till 5 years/60K. Let us know what your warranty clerk says.

Thanks
