I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier XE 2.4 L 2 wheel drive that has approximately 235,000 miles on it.I have an issue that I had come up a few times last winter and then went away with the warmer weather this summer, it has now come back as the weather has gotten colder. When I go to leave someplace after having the truck sit for more than a couple hours I either have to put it into drive and then wait 30 seconds or so or shift it into 2nd to get the truck to drive. I had the dealer check the transmission fluid earlier this summer and he said there were no issues. Im not sure how long it has been since the transmission fluid has been changed but the dealer told me that I was better off not to change it cause it could cause the transmission to totally crash and burn. Any ideas on what I can try to fix this before having to spend a chunk of change to have a transmission guy look at it.

..

A simple drain is only about 4 quarts But could possibly Cause a problem. A magnetic heater put under the tranny pan (if it's steel) would help. Also check the flow from the radiator of the tranny cooling lines. The fluid needs to be 100 or more degress to shift properly. I think I'd gamble with a simple drain and refill. Measure the drain and put the same amount back in. In some brands of trannies dirty filters can cause that kind of problem but your filter is only a wire screen that can be washed.

Good Luck.. Don S..

Hey, I know this is a really old topic, but I am having the
exact same issue that ForestryGuy explained. Ever since it
has been getting colder than 40 degrees my 2000 Nissan
Frontier will not drive in "D" after sitting all night long. Each
morning if I put the Frontier in "D" the engine revs up but
doesn't go. I can put the Frontier in "D" and take my foot off
the break and eventually, if I wait long enough, it will decide
to go. Reverse works perfectly. I have to put the Frontier in
"2" drive it for a couple hundred yards and then it shifts fine
in "D." I know it was mentioned to install a magnetic heater
as a temporary fix but I would like to know the reason why
the transmission is acting this way. ForestryGuy did you
ever figure out what was the reason? Any input /
suggestions would help. Thanks

I never figured out exactly what the issue was. I took it to a transmission shop and they pretty much told me I needed to buy a new or used transmission, that no one around where I live rebuilds them because they are a pain in the ass. I have since passed the Frontier which is actually my dad's onto my brother and purchased a new 2014 Tacoma, the frontier seats were not near as comfortable as the Tacoma.
My brother put some anti slip stuff into the transmission and it seems to be working so far. When I passed it off a little over a year ago it had 27x,xxx miles on it and pretty sure at this point he has it over 300. Sorry I cant be more of a help.

I would suspect there is an internal leak at a seal that is caused by a seal being contracted when it gets cold. After it warms up or has fluid pumped enough to overcome the amount of the leak it then engages the clutch pack and provides movement. It sounds like a rebuild may be needed.
