I just bought a 2012 Frontier. I would like s spare key to
carry in my wallet in case I lock my key in the truck. the
transponder keys are expensive. All I really need is a key
to open the door if I lock my transponder key in the cab.
Could I get a simple key made to open the door without
damaging any systems?

Yes. Does your truck have NATS(Nissan anti theft system)?
Does it have a red warning lite that looks like a key? Not
all vehicles have NATS, so they just need a regular key.

I thought there was a micro chip embedded in the key?
The dealer can make a key as well, probably cant go wrong with that, just might cost more...

Thank you everyone. I was unfamiliar with the transponder
system. My last car was a 1999 Dodge Durango, and for about
3 days my 2012 Frontier had been driving me nuts as I try
to find various controls and the meaning of various lights.
I have the flashing key. I went back to the key maker and
told him I would like a simple cheap key just for unlocking
doors, and he made one. So I now have insurance against
locking my real key in the car, and I could unlock the tail
gate with the engine running.
I think if the real key ever starts to wear out, I should n
ot wait a long time to have a copy made by the dealer

You should have gotten 2 keys with the vehicle.

This is a really helpful thread and excellent question asked. I too went from a totally manual vehicle to this technological wonder and am similarly mystified. (It's always a quandry when I don't know that I don't know something!)
I did understand that my new Frontier has a passive anti-theft system because it was a question my insurance company asked. And when they got the answer my premium went down even more so that I got a refund: the new Frontier costs less to insure than my 12-year-old Tacoma did! And yes, I still had full collision and comprehensive on the Tacoma. Amazing.
Anyway, the new one came with two sets of key + zapper (transponder or whatever) which are too bulky for a wallet and besides, the safe place for the second one is at home. So the question of getting a third, non-enhanced key to carry for emergency use is exactly to the point. Wouldn't have thought of that but will wander by the key maker now that I know. Thanks.

Now this has got me wondering whether an aftermarket, non-electronic key would be a problem when opening the door because it would be unable to disarm the alarm system? The scenario presented by runderwood is that the door might get accidentally locked while the engine is running, which of course is a particularly bad situation. Or needing to unlock the tailgate without switching off the ignition.
But I was thinking about managing to lock the keys in the car which would mean that I also couldn't easily get into the house for the spare set, as all the keys are together. I guess there are worse things than having the car alarm go off.

The "chip" in the key has nothing to do w/
locking/unlocking from the door lock cyl. If you would like
to defeat the auto lock mode, close all doors, turn
ignition on, hold lock button down(on drivers door switch)
until 4 way flashers lites flash one time. To revert back
to auto lock, do the same, just hold the lock button until
the 4 ways flash twice.

I have a 2004 Nissan frontier extended cab. I went to have a key made at the Nissan dealer said I needed a transponder key. I then went went to the local locksmith and they said the key was not a transponder key. if it was a transponder key they would charge 30 dollars for the key and 30 dollars to program. since it was not a transponder key they charged 29 dollars to make 2 new keys and lube the door locks. the new keys fixed the passenger door that would not open with the original key due to wear on the key.before you have a transponder key made, take your key to a locksmith and they can tell you in a matter of seconds if it is a transponder key. all Nissan specs says the 2004 frontier should have a transponder key.
