I have a 2004 Frontier XE, 4WD, Crew cab. The service engine light started coming on and going off in early April. I finally took it in to the dealership on Monday and the only code they found was a P2328, knock sensor. Service advisor thinks this is masking another problem since there were no other codes given. He even asked me if I cleared them. WTH?

Anyway, the estimate was $411 parts, $450 labor. They'll change the sensor out and I get to hope there isn't some other problem.

Two local mechanics told me nobody puts knock sensors on their trucks anymore, that the practice was stopped in 2003-2004. Both estimates were less than the dealership's.

I'm not having any other problems except an occasional burnt sweet smell that I notice after running errands. I don't have any visible puddles in the garage or on any pavement when I am parked.

Any thoughts about whether the knock sensor is critical? The dealership said that failing wouldn't make the SES light come on. Do I leave well enough alone and keep an eye out for leaks? My truck only has about 38,000 actual miles on it.

Thanks!

..

IMHO
It would seem if you use quality fuel and don’t carry or
pull heavy loads you might be OK with it.
I have read pre-ignition is harder on these modern
engines. Never heard it on the modern engines but it’s a
rattling sound in the old ones.
Dealerships have to charge a higher hourly flat rate due
to higher overhead. In most cases they are a lot more
familiar with the vehicles they service.

Good Luck.. Don S..

It is just under 4 hrs for the repair. The knock sensor,
int. gaskets(2), int plenum gasket and 6 lower injector
seals, I would hope do not cost $411!!!!! But then, some
dealers use the "matrix" parts pricing system that makes
the prices crazy high. Our labor rate is $80/hr, small town
in upstate Pa.
