So this evening when I went out and started the Fronty the odometer reads all 9's and the tach needle is bouncing down around zero, kind of just pulsing so to speak. 1998 XE KC 5 speed 4wd with 127,000 on it. Any ideas?

So after searching on the internet it seems this is a known problem on many Frontier instrument panels. Mine is also throwing a speed sensor code which is also addressed in the instrument panel repair. Pricing for the repair is widely varied with several on Ebay. One of the repair shops also offers the led upgrade but don't really know if I want that or not. (I like to drive with the gauge lamps down pretty low at night). The truck is maintained really well and have no intentions of selling or trading it so the repair is a no brainer.

You may want to remove the cluster assy. and tighten the
screws on the circuit board, if that doesn't help, will
need to replace or have the assy repaired.

Sent the unit for repair. Reinstalled and everything is back to normal. Changed to the LED's while I had it out. Dimmable ones with 360 degree dispersion. Really look great. Tried to upload to site but keeps getting a server error.
