Hi there!

My manual 2001 XE 3.3L 4x4 screams at me when I pull up under load
in first. It does it in first and sometimes in reverse, but in no other gears.
If I take It easy on level ground I'm ok. When I ease off on the gas while
pulling up in first the noise goes away, too. Once I'm rolling in gear I'm
fine. My money is on the noise comin from the transmission, but I'm not
100% sure. This is new territory for me.

It shifts fine most of the time, but when I shift down from fifth to fourth I
have to put it in third before it will move into fourth. If I don't put it in
third the gears grind like mad. No other gears have this problem. I also
had a clutch pedal that didn't want to come back up after shifting, so I
now make sure the clutch fluid is a the max line.

I got the truck just under two years ago. I got my hands on an
affordable 20L pail of GL-4 gear oil and changed the transmission oil
twice, a couple of weeks apart. First time the oil came out dark, second
time light brown.

Lately the truck got very smelly when I drove it. I thought I was smelling
the transmission. It is, after all, 15 years old. Then it started leaking oil
all over the transmission. Found out it was the valve cover gasket, so I
replaced the passenger side. (Will do the driver's side when I can spare
the truck for a couple of days in case I mess up. That side isn't leaking
yet.)
I cleaned up the oil on the transmission, oil pan and frame and decided
to check the level of the gear oil, just to make sure that hadn't been
leaking too. I have to drive for 20 of the nex 48 hours and I was
paranoid the gears we're running dry.

Anyway! I must have filled it with the truck on an angle, because it was
on an angle now with the plug on the high side and when I took it out oil
came out, too. Not gushing, but a good stream.

On the bright side, the oil was clear after a year in there. On the down
side, there is too much oil in the transmission.

After that whole story my questions are:

1) How bad is it to have too much oil in your gear box?
2) Can too much oil cause your transmission to scream when pulling
up?
3) If it isn't the transmission screaming at me, what else could that be?
(I know my CV joints are bad and they have been on the list on things
to do for a while...)
4) What can cause my fourth gear troubles and what can I do about it?

If you made it this far, thank you for your patience! And thanks too if
you have any suggestions.

Gerben

..

The thing I think of first when hearing a noise in first gear... then later in others is known as a throw-out bearing. It's in the bell housing and the tranny has to be pulled to replace it.

I have not had one in about 40 years. It was on a Plymouth and easy to do.

That's the extent of my knowledge .. Don S.

Thanks for the reply. I hope I can diagnose everything with some
degree of certainty before I dive into it. But that sounds like a fun
project! :-)
