I hope you guys are not getting sick of me posting a new question every other day. I don't know much about cars/trucks, just what I learn as I fix this one up and I'm having a blast doing it. But with every new problem I start doe eyed and a with a blank mind...
I took my '01 Frontier in for an "out of province" inspection (coming from AB, going to BC). I expected a list, but it wasn't all that bad after all. Only really annoying thing is a rear axle seal that I had fixed just over a year ago. It is leaking again.
Last time it was leaking on the outside of the drum, leaking all over the wheel. This time the outside is completely clean, but there is oil in the drum. Can a rear axle seal leak on the inside of the drum? I know the wheel cylinder is bad, too. Could it just be that the cylinder is the problem?
If it is a rear axle seal, does anyone have a link to a how-to for a first generation Frontier? And do I really, really need special tools for it?
Once again, thanks for any and all advice! Gerben

Sorry but I've never worked on a Nissan rear axle.
But...
A lot of the leaks are caused by over filling and/or
the axle vent being stopped up. Check the axle housing tubes on top for a little bump that might have a hose attached to it.
Your rear end should be a heavy duty that a lot of other Frontiers don't have.
Good luck Don S..

There is a rear differential vent on the top of the rear end, which if gets
plugged up, pressure is created in the differential, causing the seals to leak.
See if the vent is clogged.
