I took the plunge and purchased a Veepeak OBD II Bluetooth module for my Fronty.  $12 from Amazon.

App download, there are free ones with limited functions, but mine was $4.

Setup on my phone and I can monitor all sorts of functions from my ECU.  I have only used it 2 or 3 times, but so far so good.

Jim,

Does it tell you anything important like Real Time ATF
Temperature's?

Shows codes, MPG (relative), acceleration, emission test, and things I haven't even gotten into.

No ATF temp.  No sensor that I can find on the tranny.  Would love that.

Especially like the engine temp (actual).

For the money, it beat adding gauges.

I am sure that I will find extra stuff as time goes on.

Jim,

That's what I figured.

ATF Temperature is needed to check the ATF Level in Sump.

Scangauge II display's ATF temp 1 & 2 as well as Engine
Coolant Temp in Real Time. The Service Manual say's to
use Temp 1 to check the ATF Level.

Scangauge was the lowest price OBDII plug-in that would do
this back when I got mine about a year or so ago. Not
cheap but worth it to me. Amazon had the lowest price I
could find back then with EBay close behind. Look's like
Advance Auto Part's may have the lowest price now, cause
they are offering 25% off on 159.99 which bring's it down
to 120 $'s before taxes and Free shipping.

The Scangauge II is supposed to display error codes as
well as clear them, I think I remember reading that, but
have not used that function yet. I remember seeing some
on EBay that were used, but I try not to ever buy Used
Electronic's.

I have my Scangauge mounted in the Top Dash Tray with
Velcro, so it's closer to Eye Level, rather than haveing
it mounted lower and haveing to take my eye's off the Road
much longer.    I have mine set to display ATF Temp 1 & 2,
Coolant Temperature, & Real Time Voltage.

Regards,

From what I can find.  There is no temp sending unit on the tranny.

I may be wrong.

If there is, it should communicate with ECM and I should be able to read it.

I do need to further explore this app.  It does reset codes also.

I can tell one side of cats fail emissions testing, but no code yet.

Jim,

You need to study YOUR Service Manaul. It clearly tell's
you how to Check the ATF by useing Temp 1 at a certain
Temperature @ 149F useing the Specific Procedure as
Outlined in YOUR Service Manual. It also can be checked
useing the Cold Range before driveing. The Service Manual
doesn't give a specific temp for the Cold Range,, but I
think that it is 104F. Again more than just sticking the
dip stick in and pulling it out to read the level, YOU
have to follow the specified procedure before checking
with the DipStick.

Being so careful about useing an Exotic Engine Oil,, I
would have thought that you had read the Service Manual
and allready knew this. I'm surprised!

We have 2 ATF Temperature Sensor's 1 & 2.    I THINK, ~
#1 is the Sump and #2 is the Torque Converter.

Nissan only give's us one method to check the ATF Level
and that is when the ATF is at a Specified Temperature.

You don't have to Assume or Guess if you Study YOUR
Service Manual. But do know, that it is more than just
putting the dip stick in and pulling it out,, THERE IS A
SPECIFIC PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW OR YOU WON'T GET A CORRECT
READING AND WILL EITHER OVERFILL OR UNDERFILL.

Regards,

I admit I have a bunch to learn about the Fronty.

I saw several others actually installing temp sending units in their trannies, which initially said, no temp sensors.

My fluids choice comes from college.  I have a minor in Chemistry.  My first undergraduate assistant job was with the chem dept.  I worked with Dr Chris Clausen, he was from LSU.  He had a grant from Standard Oil to study certain components of oil and fuel additives.  He got me off racing oil and premium gas.  I learned a bunch about oil and gas during that time.  I have even taken online lubrication courses.

Jim,

The information about how to check the ATF is in the
MA/Maintenance Section. It is also in the Auto Matic
Transmission Section as well.

A Lot of guy's on the WWW Do Way Too much Talking, Over
Thinking, and Spinning Their Wheel's trying to Reinvent
The Wheel,, when all they need to do is Study the Nissan
Service Manual and do some Google Search's.

My Objective is try to do my part in Following Nissan
Preventative Maintenance Guideline's and getting the
Specialty Tool's when needed to do the Preventative
Maintenance.

That's where the ScanGauge II come's in. It's an
Electronic Display Tool that plug's into the OBD II Port
to access the ATF Sensor's. You have to put in the code's
for the Nissan Frontier 2 ATF Temperature Sensor's,
Scangauge call's them X Gauge's. It's easy though cause
the Scangauge Engineer allready worked the Code's out a
Long Time Ago,, and the Manual that come's with the
Scangauge explain's how to do it.

Don't mess your Dash Up with installing actual Gauge's and
Expend all your Extra Energy doing all that work to hook
the gauge's up. Completely Unnecessary, cause the Info is
right there at the OBD II Port.

I didn't explain it Point by Point, cause YOU need to do
that on Your Own so You'll know how to do it,, rather than
asking me how to do this and how to do that. Maybe you'll
learn something New and share it with me.

1st you need to study the Nissan Service Manual
Maintenance Section on How to check the ATF Fluid Level
and stop listening to those Flunky's on the WWW that don't
know the Correct Method of how to check the ATF Level, and
Spend their Extra Time doing all that Unnecessary Modding.

What I see is How Jethro Modded his Truck, that look's
like something a Teenager would do.

Even some of the ScanGauge Guy's mounted their ScanGauge
down WAY TOO Low, so when they look down at the Gauge they
have a good chance of wondering into the other lane or
Rear Ending the Car in Front that has Slammed on the
Brake's.

College Credential's ~ It was one of those College
Engineer's that designed the Too Small a Hole to Change
out the Oil filter. Yes he has a College Degree but no
much Practical Common Sense.

Check out Scangauge II on Amazon and see how many Review's
they've had. It's a Popular OBD II Port Plug in to
Display Real Time Info.

You can Google Scangauge and talk with the Folk's @ Lenear
Logic. I did that before I bought mine, just to make sure
it was supposed to display the info I needed to check the
ATF Level.

I'm probly coming off like I know a whole lot about my '13
Frontier, but The Truth is, it's a constant Learning
experience for me,, and when doing Preventative
Maintenance it is a Constant Effort on My Part to Not Make
a Mistake that might cost me big time, repairing what I
Broke. I have to admit, though I've got the Torque Patern
down pretty good on The Wheel Lug's now. It's really easy
how Nissan want's the Lug's Torq'd.

Regards,

My issue may not be the fault of the OBD II module.  Just its limitation.  It is a "mini veepeak", so I think it's functions may be limited.  There are better ones, but this way the cheapest route and I like to start with cheap.

Found the tranny info.  Got to look further, but I see the TCM can be in the way.  Need more investigation to see how it is mapped.

Found temp sensor references, but that brings me back to why are folks installing temp sending units if they can easily access the existing ones?  Got to look into it more.

Jim,

I don't much think that the Gen II OBD II port is limited
but rather to get the full advantage require's an
expensive tool to get all the information. Nissan has the
Tool,, but I can't afford it. However I can afford to get
an OBD II Plug In that will do what I need to do the
preventative Maintenance.

Nothing Wrong at all in going the Cheapest Route 1st, I've
done that in the past a lot. Example I started out with
the 2 ton Trolley Floor Jack's to do my preventative
maintenance. They worked OK,, but now I have Phased them
out with a HF 3 Ton Low Profile Floor Jack and a Pep Boy's
2.5 Ton Floor Jack. I used both just recently when I
rotated my Tire's,, as well as HF's Aluminum Jack Stand's
for Safety in case the Jack's started to loose Lift,, but
the Jack's held and the Frame never touched the Jack
Stand's. By the way HF has Rubber/Plastic Cover's to put
over the Jack Stand Contact point's to prevent Scratching.
I use a wooden 2X4 Block for the 2.5 ton and I used a hole
saw to cut a Small Round block of wood to use in the
Lifting Pod on the 3 ton to prevent scratching.

Folk's are installing Mounted Gauge's on Top of their Dash
cause they haven't studied the Service Manual and haven't
Searched for an OBD II plug in to read the Transmission
Temperature Sensor's, and then there are those that just
like the Clutter of Do Dad's and Glitter to Impress their
Passenger's. Look what I did and that help's their EGO.
and Provide's a Conversation Piece that can last for as
long as they want it to. In other word's they are Lacking
in Common Sense IMO. Some may not Trust Nissan. If they
don't Trust Nissan then maybe they shouldn't have gotten a
Nissan IMO.

But I say, "We've Got a Nissan So Trust Nissan Enough to
Study and Incorporate the Nissan Preventative Maintenance
Recommendation's To Take Care Of Our Nissan's". The
Owner's Manual has alway's been the GoTo for Owner's, but
Now the Extra Information for Preventative Maintenance is
in the Nissan Service Manual.

Stick with Your Common Sense and Don't waste time in
Trying to Figure out the Moder's. It's sort of like
trying to Figure out why some Manager's Keep a
Disorganized Desk. Some Manager's do that so Nobody else
can find what they need without asking for permission.

In Many Case's A Mechanical Gauge is/might be better, but
getting it done so that It'll look Professional take's a
lot of extra work. I would'nt want to buy a Used Truck
with mechanical Gauge's Mounted on Top of The Dash. No
Problem, just remove the Gauge's Right; Then You are Left
with Hole's and Scratch's on/in the Dash. In other word's
all that Extra Work probly has reduced the Resale Value.
They would have done more for their Resale Value if they
had Put Cheap Seat Cover's over their Seat's from the
GetGo.

All this Extra Modding Stuff is for Youngster's that
haven't fully Matured Enough to know it's Wasted Money in
more way's than 1. Some Youngster's don't get much Wiser
as the Year's Roll by as well. Some are Still Stuck in
the TeenAge Year's when the Hair Turn's Gray. I still
want to Fly Again,, so part of me is in that Group as
well.

Regards,
