So here's the basic story. I have a 2005 Frontier CC with 69,000 miles on it. It's not 4wd so I don't take it offroading. I don't abuse my truck because, well, it's the nicest vehicle i've ever owned. I haven't had any problems with it until 2 days ago.
I was driving to class which is roughly 45 miles one way. I noticed a humming sound as soon as I started my truck but it went away as soon as I put the truck into gear so I dismissed it. As I was pulling into class I told myself that if it was still doing it I would call my local dealership and see if it's serious. After looking it up online I now know it's a recall issue dealing with overheating. The odd part to that is I was frequently looking at my temp gauge while in the parking lot and it was sitting at the norm.
Fast forward 5 hours later when i'm leaving school. I start up the truck, no noise. I begin my normal commute home and about 10 minutes away I hear this tapping sound in the background. My first inclination is a lifter is out of whack. About 5 minutes from home the tapping became quite loud and really bad under just a little bit of gas. I slowly drove that last mile home at sub 5mph speeds, I didn't care about the guys behind me. I pulled it in and my father and i both agreed we need to take it in.
the next day, and this has to be my worse day ever, the mechanic hears my truck and says it sounds like lifter knock. I was pretty relieved until I went back 6 hours later while running errands and he says we have a huge problem. According to him, I've spun a rod bearing out. I'm not too knowledgable but I asked what happen when that cylinder was shut off by pulling the plug and he said it got worse. I'm hoping someone else here knows if this is truly a blown rod bearing, or maybe something in the timing chain is jacked up?
I'm not too up on the really in depth details about my trucks motor so take it easy. I don't have a warranty (it ran out) and I don't know if it would be covered under the overheating recall that i read on the Nissan TSB's. ANY help is appreciated guys. Thanks.
