Group,

Have an 08 Frontier, Ext Cab with 4 cyl, 5 speed manual, 34,000 miles.  There is a grind or clunk when I shift into 1st gear "unless" I am very careful and push the lever toward the left as I push it forward.

Went to my local Nissan Dealer, he agreed but didn't offer any suggestions - had a mech look at it, who also agreed.  Their answer:  you have 30,000 miles left on the warranty, if the problem gets worse we'll put in a new trans.

Called 1-800-Nissan1:  They took down the complaint.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The FS5R30A trans has been around a long time, very reliable, very easy to rebuild. Can't understand why the dealer is hesitant to repair it. Why wait, the problem is not going away by itself!

Nissan USA called back and said they would schedule a Factory Rep to look at the problem.  Supposed to happen this coming week.

I'll let you know what happens.

Well we had a meeting but I'm not sure anything was accomplished.  Service mgr, shop forman, tech rep all drove the truck - their comment to me was that they did not have another 5 speed to compare it to.... so don't know if they all do it - grind/klunk going into 1st.  All agreed that it did grind/klunk.....unless you pushed the clutch in, waited maybe 2 seconds and then very very slowly put it in 1st.

My comment was that I would be surprised if Nissan would sell a vehicle that did that.  This is my 4th Nissan truck.  The last one (a '99, 4 cyl, 5 spd) had 171, 000 on it and never ground/klunked going into gear once.

They have kicked it up to the next Tech Rep level.  We'll see.

Sure would like to hear from anyone that has an 08 with a 4 cyl, 5 speed.

Thanks

Alan

Just curious, at what speed are you going into 1st gear??? On my 6 speed, I rarely down shift into 2nd , let alone 1st.

This is at a dead stop.  If you hold the clutch in for 2 to 3 seconds you can shift into 1st with no klunk/grind at least up to 15 mph.  Never a problem with any other gear.

Strange problem isn't it?

My 6 speed is difficult into 1st while moving, that is why I use the brakes to slow down, then when stopped shift into first. Just don't build them like they used to!!!!

Group,

So I first posted this problem April 22 (I had been to the dealer the day before and called Nissan USA the same day).  Friday I get a call from Nissan USA that they had approved the money to "check out" the problem.

The dealer agreed that I had a problem the first time I went in so I have no idea what they are talking about.  Oh, well, sure would be nice if they approved the money to 'fix' the problem.
