I purchased a 07 Frontier SE, 4.0 King Cab 40k miles.  The dealer filled the tank and sent me on my merry way, later that day the Service Engine light comes on.   This is at 10 PM on Saturday, I check the gas cap, give it a few turns to make sure it clicks and then return to it in the morning.  Light is still on, I drive to Auto Zone to have the code pulled, "EVAP system major leak".  I told him the truck was just filled up and I was not sure if the cap was tight, he tells me was probably the cap.  The cap that was in it was a replacememt Stant cap, while cleaning the truck yesterday I find the stock cap in a Ziploc bag along with the bed track cleats.  I went ahead and put the stock cap back in place.  This was yesterday morning and as of now, no problems.  Couple questions 1.  How can I tell if the cap is bad, should there be any play?  How can I tell if it seals properly? 2.  If it is the gas cap, how long will it take for the ECU to reset itself?  Thanks for any help.

#1 throw away the Stant cap. #2 put the Nissan cap on. #3 most likely the VCV is stuck open. Takes 50 key cycles(trips with no failures)- a trip is=the engine is below 158 Degrees, run up to normal temp(over 178 degrees) - cooled down to below 158 degrees. There is also a filter kit available to help keep dirt out of the VCV.

Just a quick update, the light has remained off.  I had the truck at the dealer for service and no codes showed up.  Check those gas caps!  As a side note, drove almost 500 miles this weekend to the lake and back, must have seen 6-7 vehicles with their gas caps dangling out of their fuel doors.
