I had nissan trucks for 30 years and this is the 1 st year I driven a ford ranger In 30 years, my question is why did nissan get cheap and use a belt instead of a timing chain which will last the life of the engine like ford and chevy did on their small trucks. Nissan is playing with fire putting a belt on to save some pennys when the frontier 3.3 engine is an inference engine which means if that belt breaks when going hwy speed the pistons and valves will hit each other and destory the engine.

very unlikely it will hit valves unless it is a manual
trans and the crank continues to turn after the belt
breaks.(meaning the driver didn't step on the clutch
immediately when the T/B breaks) Seen many A/T equipped
vehicles w/ broken timing belts and no valve damage.

inference engine means there is no clearance between the valves and pistions, look it up, google it, yes they will hit

it also means the belt is what is keeping the valvesand pistons from hitting and in two second break most people wont know what it is before its two late and the nissan 3.3 v6 is an inference engine, look it up. you may be talking about the 4 banger which has always been a chain but the nissan 3.3 is a belt, the 3.0 and 4 .0 ford ranger is a chain, the 4.0 ranger uses 3 chains, one in the rear for timing and its an inference engine too but the 3.0 ranger is not and it uses one chain and thats the one i bought as i think an inference engine should of never been made, most of them copy it from Honda

Well, as I stated in my 28+ years of turning wrenches on
Nissans, I have done many timing belt jobs that have had
broken belts with no valve damage(V-6). On the contrary, if
a 4 cyl chain is off 3 or more teeth it will bend valves,
again, with 28+ years of Nissan experience in a dealership.
