Hi, I am a new owner of a 2011 Frontier CC w/ the v6. I
bought it new, but it had 167 miles on it as it came from
another Nissan dealership before I drove it.
It runs great, and I have babied it as it breaks in, but
I have one concern:
On a cold start, it will OCCASIONALLY and BRIEFLY CLATTER
upon start up. The fact that Nissan engineers see fit to
program the V6 to run up to 2000 rpm upon ignition
probably does not help . I know, it's all about the
emissions. Got it.
The Nissan dealership service manager ( good people, by
the way) stated: "it's probably a heat shield vibrating
on start up".
I say it is either: 1) rod clatter or 2) valve clatter.
Note this: it NEVER occurs when the engine is warm, as
the initial RPM's are much lower. Also, the engine runs
perfectly while driving. I did buy the extended
7yr/75,000 mile premium warranty from Nissan, so I'm not
worried.
I will take it in soon, but I anticipate that it will, of
course, not clatter when I take it in, so I haven't .
I would like to resolve this question soon. It has
probably "cold start clattered" every 3 days in the month
I have owned it, and the weather is HOT in SE Texas. I
anticipate the clatter issue will be more pronounced when
it is cold outside.
Any feedback/similar experiences from you veteran
Frontier owners would be appreciated !

There are 3 timing chains on this engine, they will rattle
at cold start. Mine has done it since day one, 38K later,
still going strong. Don't worry, be happy.

Frontierguy, I'm glad for two things with your reply.
1. you put my overactive imagination at ease with your post
about 3 timing chains. Probably related to the variable
valve timing .
2. You use a Bobby McFerrin lyric in your reply.....keep
listening to the music !
