High pitched whining noise - drive chain/tensioner TSB #NTB07-042
Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this issue,
that apparently is pretty common? My wife asked me what the noise was the
other day and like an idiot I started searching on-line like I would find good news and came up
with this TSB. I am going to take it to the dealer to have them diagnose
it but if the repair is $1500 to $2500 I am not sure what to do?? I
called 1800 Nissan1 and they told me to call them back once the diagnosis is
complete. Is there any shot they are going to help with this repair?
My truck has 91000 miles on it.
Thanks

Mine failed at 34,000 miles and was fixed under warranty. This problem goes across the Frontier and SUV line that uses this V-6 engine. I doubt whether Nissan UISA will help but it cant hurt to ask. You need to have the repair done or you'll lose the timing chain when it hits metal. The problem is two plastic oieces that are pushed against the chain. They wear through and the chain hits the metal underneath.

I had mine done at the 35k mark so like boomers, it was
covered under the 5/60,000 warranty..It definitely doesn't
hurt to ask though. I was told it was about a $1200 repair
otherwise. I think a recall should be issued but that's just my
opinion, which isn't worth a damn thing..lol. Good luck and I
hope it works out for you!

Thanks for the help and I agree. How can they justify making so many
customers spend that kind of money on something that is obviously
their fault. I will be movin to a different company once this truck is dead.

The warranty labor time is only around 4.6 hours for this
repair, which relates to about 6.0 hours customer pay time.
The parts involved,I am guessing, around $200?????? So
where do they come up with $1200????????????????

Non warranty flat rate time for this is about 9 hours. I just did my 2005 Frontier today. I am a professional tech and this was my first time doing this repair. I went in on a Saturday and it took me nearly 8 hours to do. The most time consuming part is cleaning all the old sealant out of the grooves in the front engine cover.
This is a fairly intricate engine and this job is not for the faint of heart. A LOT of stuff has to come apart to get to these tensioner shoes.

Obviously, I only took a few pics, and am not showing all of the steps that are required to do this job. I do have quite a few up to the reassembly, but I didn't take many after that because I didn't want to get my camera oily. I didn't have time to keep washing my hands every time I wanted to take a picture.
I don't understand why my pictures are all over the place, making the page way too big for the screen. Can a moderator please fix this, then tell me what I am doing wrong.
I got it fixed and it wasn't easy.. but it was worth it for the nice photos...lakota

The secondary timing chains that rode on the bad tensioner shoes were also replaced. There was noticeable wear on the chains from the metal to metal contact with the tensioner pistons. The tensioner pistons had small grooves in them, but in my opinion, didn't need to be replaced, as doing so would have required valve cover removal, among other things.
I used the OEM Nissan sealant that comes in a caulk style tube. I don't trust Pernatex for this critical application, plus OEM sealant cures quicker for a repair that can be driven without having to wait for it to cure.
I am a very meticulous and thorough mechanic and I take my time to do things right the first time, and this was no exception. Plus, I saved myself close to a grand by doing this myself.
If you need this done to your truck, I suggest using the dealer, or a Nissan specialist to do the job. This is not a job for the chain/tire store type of shop. Cut corners and you will have to do it again, or worse, your engine will fail.
There are numerous timing marks and this can easily get messed up. I highlighted the gold and copper colored chain links with paint markers, as well as some self made reference points. I did not have any of the special tools "required" either. Of course my shop has an Alldata subscription for technical reference. No difficulties were encountered in my opinion.
The large front timing cover has grooves in it for the sealant to go in, reducing the chance for leaks. However, cleaning said grooves of old sealant is a bitch. It took me nearly an hour to clean the front cover alone. Then there was the mating face of the engine as well. Lots of clean rags and Brakleen. I also use a plastic Roloc bristle disc, as well as a fine wire wheel. If you use wire brushes or wheels, make sure any stray wires are removed from the engine. Covering the hole created in the bottom front of the engine oil pan is highly recommended to keep objects from falling in there. Also, abrasive cleaning discs are a no no! They can take away aluminum and cause problems, not to mention the fine sand-like residue will destroy your engine.
The truck is so much quieter now! The only sound is the light throaty exhaust sound that we all love. I was not happy about having to take the front of my engine apart at 100,400 miles. Hell, if I wanted to do that, I would have bought a truck with a timing belt! It is done though, and hopefully I won't have to do it again as long as I have it. The only additional work I made for myself is the accessory belt tensioner now has to be replaced, as it's spring is weak and after retracting it, it doesn't want to hold the belt as tight as it should, creating a squeal. Sigh.... It will be replaced Monday, as will the stationary idler and the belt itself. Cheap insurance in my opinion.
I may add more pics after I make them smaller so that they will not increase the page size.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Wow that is crazy...looks like you do good work. I am waiting on Nissan
corporate to contact me back but this is something that will need to be
done one way or the other I guess. I was thinking about maybe just
getting rid of the truck which is a shame because I was going to drive it
as long as possible. However if this is any indication of what I might be
in store down the road than frigg this. Thanks for all the info how many
miles on your. 05 by the way?
