I'm replacing the wqater pump,  radiator hoses and heater hoses on my 98 4 cylinder to fix a series of small  coolant leaks at the connections.  I was seduced into do this by the potential to save about $800 in labor.  I'm learning why the labor was so high!

One of the heater hoses connects to the engine block in an virtually unreachable place tight against the firewall at the tranmission tunnel in the back  of the block.  Any tricks or tips for getting this clamp and replacing the hose?  I can touch the clamp, but can't see it.  The only possiblility seems to be taking the right front wheel off, removing the skirting and using a series of extentions (about 2 feet) to reach the clamp bolt.  Seems kind of hokey.

Surely sombody has encountered this problem before?!

Thanks!!

I noticed When I had the trans out which might be easier and better because you can also disconnect the other stuff back there and clean or replace them.  When I removed my hoses under the intake tube, I noticed that the ends of the tube became rusty from the clamp being to far towards the end of the hose instead of being close to the flared end of the nipple.  This rust works it's way under the clamped part of the nipple and causes a leak.  In any case what you are trying to do will not allow for this. You don't say if you have a Auto or manual or 4x4.  The 4x4 is tough but the others not so tough.  If you slide the trans back about a foot all that will be assessable and while your at it you can change the trans input seal and output seal.  This way you will be able to do a sanding job on the nipples and get them good and clean with the proper tightness of good stainless steel clamps,  The Nissan Pinch clamps on mine broke tying to remove them since the hose was swollen larger than the clamp would allow. Hope this helps.  Get a CD repair manual from E-Bay about $10 so you have some instructions on just whats involved.  Some of the hoses are almost impossible to remove without destroying them and scratching the tub they fit on to.  Bad move.  Then it's do it again Sam time. Good DIY to you.Tongue  One more tip.  Before you start go to a outdoor car wash and really clean the whole engine top and bottom, frame, every thing.  You'll be glad you did.Clap Opps, don't forget if you do the trans thing to watch out for any sensors in the bell housing right on the edge. disconnect after you lower the trans a bit. LOL
