I've just replaced the engine in my 02 Frontier XE, a 3.3 non supercharged version. The run up to the engine failure was very similar to the problems of AGRACE 1410 "2005 Nismo excessive oil consumption". I had intermitten check engine light on followed by rough running and then oil consumption of about 1 quart every 100 miles. From reading the replies It sounds like the catalitic converter is /has failed. Is there any way to verify this? Can the catalitic converter ruin my new engine? Nothing was mentioned to me when the garage installed the new engine. I appreciate any feedback you can give me. Thanks,.

Do you have a failure code for the cats? P0420 or
P0430????? 02 and 05 are two completely different animals.
Have seen very few cat failures on the 02, none resulting
in engine failure as far as oil consumption.

Frontierguy;

No "check engine" lights are on now since the new engine was installed, but I'll watch out. Thanks for the info.

What were the codes prior to engine replacement, if the old
cats were put on the new engine, you could have serious
consequences!!!!! Need to find the source of the original
failure.

Frontierguy;

The local garage said the code was for misfire on #3 cyl and did a tune up. It ran smoother after the tune up, but by then it was guzzeling oil.  I took it to the Nissan dealer and they said the pcv valve was stuck open and they replaced it, but the engine was in pretty bad shape by then Should I replace the cat anyway?

Thanks

It is hard to justify replacing cats w/o a failure code to
support it. The garage that put in your engine should have
at least done a visual on the cats to see if they were
coming apart and were the cause of the oil consumption.
Hate to see you destroy another engine. Might want to talk
to the guys that put thee engine in and see why they think
it was using oil.
