hey guys my 98 frontie started making a minor knockin/rattling noise around the upper cam chain area...checked it with the stethoscope and narrowed it down to that area..i also removed the acc belts to make sure it wasnt the power steering pump...truck has correct oil and level, this started a few days ago and has gradually got louder....so i pulled the valve cover off and this truck has obviously not been maintained well as you can see everything covered in burnt oil....but i checked the tensioner and it looks ok(chain barely put a minor groove in it)...sooooo i took the fuel pump fuse out and bumped it a couple times, checked again and the chain was alot looser??so i had someone turn the truck over for a few secs and watched the chain and tensioner...well the tensioner was jumping back and forth and allowing the chain to do the same???so it would be tight, then loose, then tight again??wtf? im guessing this tensioner is hydraulic? could the oil ports up to it be clogged?or is the tens. just bad altogether? also if you look on the chain you can see some marks were it appers the chain is making metal to metal contact somewhere?

It's the main chain you need to worry about. Need to pull
the cover and inspect. Most likely will need chains,
tensioners, quides, seals etc. I have actually seen where
the chain has worn the cover into a water passage(makes a
real mess). From the pics, the motor looks fairly clean.

well i took the top cover off and the tensioner is worn down a little but not alot...i can see the main chain and none of the guides are broke or really worn down? the chain isnt loose.....and the noisr was coming from right by were the upper tensioner was. i checked the oil passages and blew them out with air, they didnt seem to clogged up.......heres some pics...could this little of wear on the tensioner plastic cause the rattle??i really dont wana have to pull the lower cover off and drop the oil pan and all that crap unless its absolutely nec.. the truck only has 120k i cant see the chains getting stretched.....

i can see the main chain and guides from having the top cover off and everything 'looks' ok.. none of them are broke and flapping around, not worn threw or anything? i pulled the oil pan to look for any broken pieces and i found this tiny piece of plastic that does apper to be a piece of the guide but i just dont see this little piece missing causing the rattling i was hearing......

My experience has seen the lower(main) chain and guides as
the problem. It's not that big of a deal to pull the cover.
Just be sure to put it on top dead center #1 cyl before
removing any chains. If memory serves me correct, I believe
the cover will come off w/o removing the pan, but it has
been a long time since I've done one.
