Howdy,
Three years ago at 68,000 I had ECM reprogramed because of p0420
code. Reprogram was per tech bulletin for 2001 Frontier XW 2.4 cyl.
Everything was okay for 3 years.

P0420 code has shown up again last few weeks with 88,000 miles on
truck. After getting the code I checked and code reader showed p0420.
Few days later with the yellow check engine light still on I checked
again but the code reader said "no diagnostic code available". But code
reader showed info still retained in the freeze frame. So I cleared codes
and no problem for a few weeks. P0420 came back. After a few days
same no diagnostic code available but still shows in freeze frame and
yellow check engine light still on.

At this point all I can assume is that the catalytic converter is bad. With
the code reader showing the code and then not showing the code
would this be a intermitted problem.

Assuming it is a generic code reader, have had the same
results reading codes with a generic. You are correct on
the cat needing replacement. Might want to verify you have
no conditions that are causing the cat to fail, skip, etc.

Thanks for your help. I had some trouble starting the truck today.
Would not start. I depressed the gas pedal all the way to the floor.
After 3 or 4 tries truck would not start.   On the last try I kept my foot off
the gas pedal and after a few moments the truck started and ran bad
for a few seconds. The last few years every few months the truck
would be hard to start. I don't know if this would have anything to do
with the p0420 code.

Are you using a Genuine Nissan oil impregnated air filter?
If not, you need to get one and clean the MAFS with
approved cleaner. According to the tech guys @ Nissan, it
only takes 5 sec. of misfiring to destroy a cat!!???!!??
You might want to remove the dist cap and check for any
dust or debris in there. Again, Genuine Nissan electrical
parts are highly suggested as opposed to after market.
