The shop manual indicates that you should not fill the rear differential to the edge of the filler opening but to some point below it.  The manual just gives a refill capacity.  My question is:  would it be harmful to refill the rear differential to the edge of the filler opening?  (cause leaks, etc.?)

Yes...

I don't know what model diff you have but yes many will
leak when over filled due to lub getting in the axle
housing and knocking out the wheel bearing seals.

Our fourth Great Grand son is on the way!
