hello,
first post. truck was running 3/17. shifter lights
went out while truck was running. stopped to get fuse
believing this the problem. lights started working
again.
drove a little more and after last stop same problem no
shifter lights (PND21). made it home thankfully.
next day would not start. blower, headlights, brake
lights, horn, emergency flasher - all work. no power to
starter (no click). battery @ 12.85vdc. checked all
fuses - appear good.
wipers, blinker, starter don't work.
any idea? any ideas appreciated.

thanks for the welcome & the response.
i'm the original owner of this truck & it has been
almost maintenance free for 17 1/2 years, so i don't
really know a whole lot about certain things on it.
there are many possibilities. i live on a dirt road -
might be a ground problem.

Well a short would/could also cause the battery to
get completely drained.
If the fuse fixed the light for a while pull the fuse and charge the battery. See if that helps, it could be in that wire or light fixture.
Give it a try.. Don S..

If memory serves my correctly, there should be a starter
relay on the passenger side near the battery(large blue
relay). See if you have power from ignition switch and
power for the relay coil. I suspect the wipers and t/s
may be a fuse or corrosion in the harness. Now that I
think about it, the large blue relay is on the earlier
models. There still should be a relay to check in the
relay panel.

the battery is not being drained, but this needs to be
checked/verified w/ a meter. ECU relay swapped w/ no
change. inhibitor relay tested ok.
removed fuses from non-working sections (blinker, wiper)
w/ no change.
but no 12v to inhibitor relay coil. might be inhibitor
switch problem since there is no light to the PRND12
shifter panel. will attempt to jump this since part is
about $80.
when the ignition switch is turned on the little beep
beep tone sounds. no panel lights illuminate.

i stand corrected - there is a short in the electrical
system and the battery is now drained about 1v after a
few days.
apparently the circuit in which the short is located was
not found in the previous 'fuse pull' effort. so, it is
time to widen the search in order to narrow it.

this issue is closed.
this was an unusual problem, so i used the 'lone wolf'
method of troubleshooting which is to find out where the
problem IS NOT.
finally it was clear that the ignition switch was a
problem and a battery ground terminal. i suspected that
the ground straps on the entire truck might need
cleaning/replacing due to the hostile dirt road driving.
i bought a new 2016 frontier sv crew cab v6 and sold the
1998 to someone down the street that is willing to work
on the truck more than me.
this wonderful truck gave 17.5 years faithful service to
me, the original owner.
