Ok so I'm new to the whole do it yourself concept. I decided to change my oil in my truck (for the first time) and drained the oil and everything successfully. Now when it comes to taking out the oil filter, I thought it was the canister that was black, which turned out to be the starter. Sooo dummy me, took off the starter and all. Yea it didn't quite click till right after I took off the starter as to why the oil filter would be on the transmission..

To make a long story short, my buddy and I managed to get the starter all back together and back on. My only worry now is that I some how may have not lined up the gearson the drive pinion. Yet the starter screwed on perfectly, the whole nine yards.

Are there any noises I should be aware of if something goes wrong? Are there any indications of my starter somehow being destroyed and me not knowing it? Please help!!

Ok well after hours of research and me feeling stupid, Ive discovered tat the starter only turns once, when you start and not continuously. So, that leads me to believe that the noise I think I hear is a figment of my imagination or something else completely wrong..

You have a  lot to learn grasshoppa . But don't feel dumb, thats what these forums are all about...asking for help when you have reached the end of your knowledge.

The starter spins only until the engine can run on its own power, which might be about 1 second. If the starter is still engaged when the engine is running, you should hear a loud grinding sound. If you dont, then I would say you did everything right.

With all that happening, did you ever get around to changing the filter?

haha yea im good, the starter is fine. Yea im a grasshoppa, but not so much when it comes to DSM's.

I changed the oil filter.. hard to get to. more annoying than anything. I suspect the reason why i thought something was wrong is because i switched to synthetic oil, trucks gotta let it work through..

no problems anymore.. what a trip though, lol

I have always heard that switching to synthetic is good but not if you this is the truck's first oil change (from the factory). Conventional oil produces enough friction to let all of the vital engine parts set correctly.  Im not sure how many miles you can go before you can switch to synthetic with a brand new truck, so you may be ok...but do your self a favor and look it up. It may save you some money in the long run.

Chris is right.  New ring technology does not require the breakin period.  That is why so many new vehicles now come with Mobil 1 from the factory.  I changed to it at 1000 miles and burn no oil after 4000 additional miles on the Mobil 1. Use synthetic and don't look back.  Ity's good for gas mileage and if you plan on keeping the truck a long time, it will be one of the best things you can do.  Mobil 1 5W-30 is sold by Wal mart in 5 qt containers for just over $21.  Use a quality filter like a Wix (Napa Gold) or a Mobil 1 or a Purolator Pure 1.  You can extend the drain intervals over regular oil and in the end it can actually save you money.
