So my 2002 frontier V6 needs a new engine with only 120k
- wow - the truck is sitting with the engine removed
outside in the elements (the hood is down but not
completely)
My questions: Is there anything that should be
protected from the weather while the engine is out.
Also, I was just informed that my mechanic wants to roll
the truck into the shop (uphill) to work on it. I don't
know how we're gonna do it but is there anything i
should be concerned with when moving this truck without
the engine.

What all has been removed from the truck? I'm assuming that just the motor. Provided the transmission is put into neutral, and the parking brake is released, you should be just fine.
I am wondering that if he just removed the engine, exactly how is the transmission supported?

With the hood down you should be ok. Upon reassembly, I would check any connectors for corrosion that may have appeared due to exposure to the elements. If it's manual, maybe some grease on the input shaft for protection. Moving the vehicle should be of no concern. What happened to the engine anyway? These engines are bullet prove!

Well I couldn't really get a good answer as to why it
went out. One person said that possibly the catlytic
converter going bad caused it.
Only the engine has been removed. It is a 4X4 automatic

Hey man when you get the motor apart thow some pics of the pistons and valves. Have pulled the spark pugs out and was there any carbon built up on them

Yeah you should be fine, I would go down to a parts store and pick up an electonic cleaner. It's similar to brakleen, but won't destory sensors.
Personnaly I would find out why they're having to replace the motor. A "Possibly because the Cat was bad" is not an answer... not even by a long shot. A bad Cat would only cause a lot of back pressure, possibly causing damage to valves. But that doesn't mean a whole engine rebuild.
Something smells fishy, and you're not getting the whole story.

yeah the valves went bad and then when the heads were
off they put a tool on the pistons and said there were
rocking in the cylinders too much

Valves do not go bad on these engines, bad cat or not. Did the timing belt jump or break causing the valve damage? If so, you can replace valves and guides if needed. As far as pistons moving in the bore, yes they do, sounds like someone is giving you a royal hosing.
On the QR25 engine used in the 02 and newer Altima, if the TW cat broke up for any reason, it would suck pieces of catalyst into the engine due to negative pressure in the exhaust, which would cause scoring of the cyls and rapid ring wear. This is due to the fact that the TW cat is part of the ex manifold. Haven't seen this happen on a truck yet.
