Ni44anfront,
Yes, frontierguy was dead on the money, it doesnt sound like a metal to metal rub and I could see it sounding kinda like a supercharger. I went to a dealership and within seconds the tech was able to tell me the exact same thing. Hopefully you are still under warranty because it is going to be a costly repair. If not, all I can say is that I have driven mine many many miles just wondering what the noise is, no problems!

Is the secondary tensioner shoe replacement covered under warranty if a whine is not heard?

If there were a problem with that, you would def hear the whining. As far as I know, its the only indication/symptom of the problem.

The first step in warranty repairs is to verify the concern. Unlike a recall where the repair is made regardless of a defective part or not. If you are a loyal customer and have a good relationship with the dealer, they may opt to do the repair due to many known cases of this concern or they may tell you to wait for the tell-tale whining sound.

Frontierguy,
I checked with my local dealership to get a total cost for this repair, they said it was a 14hr job, I gave him the revised procedure "code" that you gave me. Does the revised procedure require a less work?
Thanks.
I also have another issue, and I am getting them taken care of slowly but surely, the truck has started humming from the front passenger side of the engine. Could be pullies, but seems to be more towards mid or rear engine from underneath. (its honestly hard to tell), it sounds alot like a Ford fuel pump whine and changes pitch when revved and settles back to idle. It seems to be affected by power surges, because at idle it will change pitch a little when I hold down the pwr window button after the window is already stopped. It sometimes stops on its own and sometimes (but not always) when I start the air compressor.

I think I would find a more honest dealer!!! Warranty pays 4.6 hrs for this repair, that converts to 6 hrs for customer pay. NOT 14 HOURS!!!!Someone is trying to get into your shorts big time!

if you have been there before for a small repair, hold their feet to the fire
demand the warrenty work to be done. the 14 hours BS is plain rip off, i paid out of pocket big$$ for the chain guides, i was misled by telling me it was the timing chain
until frontierguy questend it, then the story changed to the plunger and it may have damaged your engine you will end up paying up to $6K for a replacement engine, since i have changed the clutch and other parts myself, and happy to announce that my truck ROCKS... except today i have the air bag light problem, thanks guys

I have a 2006 4.0 crew cab SE with 88.5k miles on it. I have had no issues with it for 4+ years. However I am now hearing a "jingle" when I first start the truck in the morning. I think it is related to the tensioner or the guides on the timing chain. The funny thing is that the sound goes away when the engine heats up a bit or the temp outside is warm.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks for providing a wealth of information. This site has been eye opening to say the least.
Cheers,
-Kevin
