I know this is off topic for the Frontier forum but I wanted some opinions from the Nissan experts.  I like the Nissan Altima and Maxima but am hesitant due to the CVTs that are used.  Does anyone have any thoughts, advice, experience with the newer CVTs?  How durable are they?  Is this a downer in buying a Nissan vehicle?  My wife has a 10 year old Saturn that we bought new and someday it will need replaced.

Very few failures seen. The ones that do fail come from the
local repo auction(abuse). Just like anything else, be
kind, service it, it will serve you.

Thanks, Frontier guy.  I am just wary...new technology, horror stories, etc.  I really value your opinion.

Boomer

Also look for Keyless, Electric motorized throttles, Electric Power steering, Electric A/C, Electric Power Brakes, Electric Cooling Fans and all Computer controlled! Humans are allowed to have a small input to the new systems that are begining to come out.

New cars are going to need stronger charging and wring systems.

The Electric motor throttle and Electric controlled Automatic transnission in our Camry really suck and it's a shame because the car is other wise great!

Have a good one.. Don S..

And don't forget that wonderful CAN system where multiple
control units communicate on the same line!!!!

Frontierguy, ever drive a car from the late 40's with cable brakes?  No hydraulics.  You pushed on the brake pedal and cables pulled on the brakes.  Frightening to use in a panic stop!

Boomer, last I heard the people at Nissan have extended the warranty on the Ultima transmissions to 70K. Is that because they knew they had problems or because they wanted to show that they would stand behind their products? Saturn did indeed use the slip-o-matic transmission and had problems. Check out the Saturn forums. There are several years where everyone was advised to steer clear of because of this. Not sure if the tranny is 100% the same but I personally would not buy one and I have owned several Saturns.

Fortunately, my wifes Saturn has a regular AT, not a CVT.  We like the looks of the Altima in particular and the local Nissan dealer is relly good to me with my Frontier.  So I am wondering about the new generation CVT trannys in those cars in particular.

I worked Hudson dealerships and many others in the 1950s & 1960s. Those "Step Down" Hudson Hornets with "Twin H Power" had mechanical brakes backing up the hydrolic system. The Hornets were fast and cornered good. These were the only cars I know of made with mechanical brakes during the 1950s. I drove a 1918 Studebaker and a 1924 Air Cooled Franklin (wooden frame) and a few others with mechanical brakes. My 1934 Plymouth had  hydrolic brakes. Those old hydrolics brakes were prone to brake fade. It was no fun when playing "Ditch'em" when they faded away...

Ahhhh... the good old days... Don S..
