It is against the law for residents of California and Minnesota to mount anything to their windshield, radar detectors, GPS, etc.  I created a solution to this problem in my 2006 Frontier LE CC.

I had a piece of custom 1/4 inch glass made at the local glass shop.  It fits perfectly in the pocket on top of the dashboard.  I used the rubber mat from the dashboard pocket as a guide.  I had the glass shop grind the edges so they would not be sharp.  The Garmin GPS suction cup mount attaches to the new glass.

Gravity holds it in place.  It's such a perfect fit it doesn't move.

Total price for this project was $18.39.  Garmin wanted $45 for their dashboard mount.  Mine is MUCH better.

I remove the unit (still attached to glass) from the dashboard and place it on the passenger-side floor when the truck is parked to keep the thieves away.

 That's pretty sharp.
