Hey guys what's going on? I drive a 2010
nissan frontier Pro4x v6 with 78k on it.
My gas mileage has fallen really low
lately (around 11 mpg) and I don't know
what to do. I take care of my truck and
there is no check engine light. My buddy
thinks it's sparkplugs so I'm doing that
this weekend. Any help would be great.

Lot's of thing's can affect MPG:

Type of Tire's, Some Tire's hurt the MPG.  Low Tire Air Pressure.  Dirty  Air Filter.  Heavy use of  Gas Pedal, & Brake Pedal.  Oxygen Sensor like previous posting.  Modification's that affect Aerodynamic Airflow.  4wd's don't get as good MPG's,  as 2wd's usually.

If your engine is useing too much Oil,, the Cat's can get restricted,, and that will cause less MPG's.

For the most part,, I've found that keeping the Truck & Engine as Close to stock as possible, as well as keeping up with the Maintenance Schedule,, is about the most that an owner can do for optimum MPG's,, and Vice Versa,, the more Mod's that are done,, the worse the MPG's usually get.

Has the Maintenance Schedule been kept up to snuff?

On my '13 SVV6, I'm getting right @ about 20.5 MPG in Mixed Driveing, Maintenance is up to snuff, easy on Gas & Brake Pedal, Shell Regular.

Good Luck,, and let us know if you find the problem.

I don't feel quite so bad now after reading some of the other posts. I have been disappointed w/ my new Frontier. Love the truck, but the 4 cyl is only getting about 17mpg in mixed driving. I try to stay off the pedal, and it will increase to about 19 mpg in mixed if I'm really careful. I only have 2,000 miles on the truck so far, though, so it's not really broken in yet. I've followed all the directions so far, so hopefully things will get better. Wishing I got the 6 cyl now.

Hey Perica,

I drove a '93 KC 4cyl AT 2WD for 20 year's.  IMO they engine is a good one and has a timeing chain.

Your's has more pulling power than the '93 that I had and as long as you don't go over 3500 lb's towing,, I think that you'll do fine.

I have to pull about 4k lb's sometime's, so I needed more pulling power.  Still I almost had to settle for a 4cyl again,, but was persistent and able to get a good deal on a 6cyl KC AT.

When it come's time to get another Truck, before you sell the Nissan,, talk to Nissan Consumer Affair's and they'll probably give you a VPP, which is a discount on a New Nissan Truck.  It's like a Loyalty discount.  They gave me one,, and it really made the difference in me being able to get a new truck.

Good Luck

Another thing that will affect MPG is the Rear end Gear
Ratio.

On my '13 v6 AT 2wd the rear axle ratio is 1.937. That's
the best stock gear ratio for best MPG that I know of in
the Nissan Frontier V6 truck.

I have switched from 87 octane to 89 now,, because the
Service advisor said that it is better for the valve's.
After switching it may have helped the mpg more,, but I
haven't done an average mpg yet. It hasn't hurt the mpg,
and it has a little bit more power maybe. My last
average was 20.4 mpg. I'm hopeing that it will be a
little bit higher next time.

But for the most part, the 4wd have a much higher rear
axle gear ratio, that hurt's their mpg for sure, as well
as those that use the brake's a lot,, and have a heavy
foot on the gas pedal.

For all the one's that got 4wd, I sure hope that they
need it,, because they'll be paying more in gas when they
drive it.

Takeing off fast,, brakeing hard for traffic light's and
following too close is a mpg disaster, no matter what the
rear axle gear ratio is though.

I feel pretty fortunate after reading some of these
posts. Recently had to tow a U-Haul 5x8 Cargo trailer
(fully loaded with tools of all kinds) from Houston to
N.Carolina with my 2009 Frontier Crew Cab V-6 Auto
(107,000 miles). It surprised me by getting 16.6 mpg
going up loaded. Coming back with no trailer it
registered 22 mpg. Did get new plugs at dealer before
the trip. I do nothing special on maintenance but am
regular on oil and filter changes. Only thing is in N.
Carolina above Asheville I wished I'd had a 4x4 off the
pavement and new tires (they are OEM BFG type).

I've got a 2017 King Cab with the 4 cylinder and the 5 speed auto transmission.
Got it with just under 9k miles on the
odometer a couple weeks ago. The gas mileage is terrible. I saw that it was
rated for 17 city / 23 highway, but on my first fill
up I calculated 13.37mpg. I filled my tank up with 131.4 miles on my trip
odometer and it took 9.826 gallons to fill up. About 45
miles of that were of highway driving. I even poured a bottle of Seafoam in the
tank before I even drove it for the first time. And before anyone says anything, I
drive with a pretty light foot on the gas pedal.

I changed the oil with 5w30 full synthetic and a fresh Mobil 1 oil filter. I
checked my air filter and seems kinda dirty, I guess.
Maybe that's effecting the mileage? I wouldn't think it needed changed at 9k
miles. It was surprisingly kind of a pain getting
that airbox closed again with the filter in it. I'll probably pick up a fresh air filter
tomorrow. With the mileage being this poor I'm
sort of regretting not getting a Tacoma now.

I used original spare parts, filters, oil. What is
indicated by the manufacturer. Fuel, only the highest
quality.

Willis,

You need to check the MPG at least 3 time consecutively
by Odometer & Pen to Paper method.

If the Air Filter looks dirty then change it and make
sure that the filter holder fit's snug all the way
around, other wise you'll ge unfiltered air to the
motor ~ Not Good.

When I changed my Air Filter out,, and it didn't really
look all that dirty, My MPG increased about 1 MPG,
Amazing.

Well getting a Used Truck, not knowing how it was
broken in and/or Maintenance and Mod's, it's a Crap
Shoot. That's why I try to alway's buy Brand New.

Let us know what the MPG is after at least 3
consecutive refill's useing Pen and Paper.

With my '13 V6 KC AT I get 20.4 MPG Mixed Pavement, but
not on Dirt Road or Off Road.

Regards,

My tank has only been filled 3 times since I got it.  First tank 19.1, second 16.4, and third 17.0.

Much better than my Durango.
