This is my first message on this forum but I have had my Nissan Frontier (2001 Crew Cab XE) for seven years and it now has nearly 123,000 miles on it.  I haven't had many problems with the vehicle and have serviced it regularly (about every 3,500 miles).  Since I work in education, I have been off the past week and will be off the next week and first noticed the problem on Saturday morning.  I hadn't driven the truck enough to get it warmed up in about four days at that time.

When the truck finally got warmed up on Saturday morning I was stopped at a red light and noticed a thick white smoke blowing past my driver side window.  I noticed a car behind me so didn't even look at my own exhaust pipe.  However, when I stopped at a store and then in a drive through for breakfast, it became apparent it was my Frontier.  The "smoke" only comes out when I am sitting idle, stopped, or slowing down quickly.  When placing it in park after arriving home, it will smoke quickly (about three - five seconds) and then stop.  Also, the "smoke" doesn't appear as thick today as it did yesterday.  I have checked the oil, anti-freeze and water levels and, if I'm losing any, it isn't enough to be able to tell it.  Also, I was initially concerned that it might be the head gasket but with no sign of water in the oil, losing anti-freeze, or no issues of the car trying to overheat, I'm trying to search for other possibilities.  I'm hoping some of you might be of some assistance with this (or have experienced it before) and can tell me what to expect.

The truck was last serviced on Monday morning by a Quick Lube Center (prior to that I had always did general oil changes myself).  Could it be something to do with moisture?  I'm only asking because it has been incredibly humid and moist here lately and my brother once had a Toyota Truck that had the same issues whenever the conditions were moist.  I'm decent enough at oil changes and general stuff (tire rotation) but need to know if I should see a mechanic...

Thanks...

If you want to err on the side of caution, have the engine pressure tested.  They put pressure on the radiator overnight and see if it holds.  If not, can be a bad head gasket, cracked block, loose hose fitting, etc.  But check over the engine compartment yourself.

Small amounts of antifreeze entering one or two cylinders from a head gasket leak may not show up in the oil.

Thank you for your response.

I have also noticed (later last night) that it also appears to be shooting out a bit of white smoke whenever I accelerate (after I have been stopped).

I have a three hour appointment that is twenty miles away that I must attend before I'll return back in town a little after Noon.  That might also give me a little more of an opportunity to see what other "symptoms" may exist.  I have a mechanic expecting it around 1:00.

Again, thank you so much for your response.

Please let us know what you find out.  This can help others who may have the same symptoms and helps build an "experience library".  Best of luck.  A head gasket is not the end of the world, head must be removed and a new gasket installed.  Labor, not parts, is what gets you as a lot of stuff usually has to be removed and reinstalled to do the job.  Make sure that quality parts are used and the the head is checked for flatness before reinstallation.  If needed, pay for the mill work to true the head.
