After reading jjp53 last post bout oil usage and the owner before him used Quaker state. This has got me thinking. I`ve was always told that Pennzoil had a high wax content and very low zinc in there oil. Quaker State had a very low zinc content that was part or the nickname quaker sludge. All this that I just posted was stuff fron friends there dads and old garage shops. What i getting to is I`ve heard of this issues sludge started in the 70s How 2 motor oils that have a bad rep still be around

..

I believe certain engine conditions like short hops where the engine doesn’t get warm enough or a certain part of the engine gets to hot cause any oil to sludge. I the 1950s it was a lot more common. All my mechanic friends laugh at me for using Pennzoil. I’ve been using it since 1959. I’ve been using Wal-Mart pure synthetic (rumored to be Pennzoil) in my 11 year old Frontier. One engine put out by Toyota had a sludge problem and it didn’t matter what brand of oil. The engine was designed with an oil passageway too close to the exhaust. The last engine I’ve seen an engine with sludge it was a ‘shelled out’ Chevy 350 with a stuck exhaust heat riser. I do all our oil and filter changes at home… so I know it’s done correctly!

Have a good one! Don S..
