I'm new to this forum and thought I would register and chime in with a couple of questions. I just recently last week purchased a 2008 Nissan Frontier SE 2 Wheel Drive. My entire family has been Nissan since i was born. My first truck was a 92 Nissan Frontier 5 speed barebones that was given to me when my dad bought a 98 Nissan Frontier SE 5 Speed. Since then the entire family has had nissan's, the 92 I drove was sold with over 380k miles and still in perfect condition. The 98 to this day has over 400k miles with the engine and tranny still running perfect and my dad has an 04 Crewcab SE with 480k miles (yes we drive ALOT in our business). I bought a used 94 Nissan Altima SE 5 speed back in 05 for $2700 "i was 3rd owner" and it still runs to this day with over 300k miles on it now.

Anyways, now that you have my background obviously i've always been a die hard nissan fan and thought that my purchase of the 08 Nissan Frontier SE with only 50k miles was an easy buy considering the great reliability of all the others. This time I went with the automatic transmission as the dealer assured me that the Nissan Auto Transmission were as reliable if not more than the 5 speed.

Now fast forward to me reading this forum and I'm hearing all the nightmare stories of Nissan and the Coolant mixing with the ATF fluid. Should I get an external cooler installed on mine or were these quirks fixed on the 08's and later?

I apologize for my rambling i'm just worried that I may be a victim of this flawed design. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would by-pass the cooler in the rad and add an external cooler. You are warranted until 5yrs/60K, but it only takes about a 1/2 cup of coolant to seep into the ATF and get things messed up. Sometimes it is very hard to detect a problem, next thing you know, you are out of warranty!!!

Just bought an 08 frontier crew cab with 24k on the clock, the transmission cooler on it just puked, cost nissan 5031.00 in parts plus several hours labor to fix it. If i still got it when the warranty runs out, i will switch the cooler to an external one.

I love thre truck, rides nice, close to 20 mpg around town with a/c on.

loads of torque and power of a v-8 from a v-6.

If anyone finds a good AT cooler, let me know where you got it and what size you got. I will be doing mine installation soon, I am not taking chances.
Do you think I can get by with one mounted under the bed with no fan?

Also, even if the AT cooler is external, won't the radiator still go out should the internal AT cooler tank leak? Guess I should plug the AT cooler holes on the radiator?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Found a external AT fan mounted cooler, if I were to put this under the bed, would I want air passing down towards the ground? In other words air blowing towards the street as opposed to towards the bed? Should fan face street or should it face the bed of the truck (facing up)?

that depends on how close you mount it to the bed. if its to close it wont get enough air flow. its always better to mount it like the radiator is to get air to flow through it while driving

..

Good idea to mount it behind the cab! No good comes from adding heat to the radiator. Even with out the fan the core will add extra cooling. I'd mount the fan to blow upward. When the fan is turned off any debries collected would tend to fall out. Always dodge plastic sacks on the highway... They can cause problems when winding up in U-joints causing them to over heat etc.!

Have a good one.. Don S..
