I have an 05 Nissan Frontier Nismo. I just recently replaced the transmission due to the trans cooler busting and mixing coolant with MTL fluid. First thing I do is go to the dealer and get a new radiator and transcooler. The next day the transmission goes out. I take it and get a new transmission. The day after picking it up from the transmission shop the car stops running and starts to studdor. I look at the temp gauge and see that it is rising quick so I get it home and replace the thermostat. Once I start it after replacing the thermostat it doesn't want to start. I give it a little gas and get it to come to life. As we are letting it warm up we notice that the temp gauge is going all over the place. Varring from 20-50 degrees in a few seconds. The thermostat is opening and The fans come on fine,it will stay where the temp gauge should be for 5-6 minutes then it goes hay wire again. I figured it was the temp sensor so I went and replaced that. Now it starts fine and will idle fine but after driving down the road it starts to shut off and start back up again? When you let it idle it will shut its self off after 5 minutes. What could the problem be? I am not getting a check engine light. Any help would be appreciated. WOuld the cats cause this type of problem. I have 100k on the truck.

The coolant system is very difficult to bleed air out of without the proper equipment to refill the system. As far as the shutting off goes, anything goes!!! IPDM E/R, bad or corroded connection, intake air tube not secured properly, etc etc. So how many trans did you put in it? I had a hard time following your story.

A good simple question to ask... "does the check engine light even illuminate when you first turn the key on?"

I know it's a little weird and seems like a "duh" question.  But I have ran into situations where the light bulb is burned out and the driver never knows that there is a code.  Plus I'm not there to look at the dash to see for myself.

Sorry about that I have only put one trans in it. I went and got the check engine code that came on last night checked and it is a P0300 code. Maf, Cats, or bad injectors. I am headed to go check on a new cat.

I have got the truck to quit shutting off. Now all that happens is the temp gauge jumps up and down 20-30 degrees in a few seconds and goes from showing normal temp to showing right above half way. It is on normal most of the time it is being driven.

When I first start it up it idles real ruff and then it smooths out. Any thoughts?

yes, the check engine light lights up.

How long does the rough spell last? a few seconds is normal as it takes just a bit for the ECU to adjust everything for that smooth idle.  At first start up the truck is running on mechanical settings.

how quick is this jump? are we talking a shaking needle, or just a slight increase and it steadies off?

P0300 is multi cyl miss fire code. Possibly due to a dirty MAFS( using a GENUINE NISSAN OIL IMPREGNATED AIR FILTER??), possible A/F ratio sensor, along with many other possibilities.
