2000 Frontier, 5 spd., 3.3, 4WD. Just replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. I adjusted the clutch so that it starts engaging about 1/2 way up as I release the clutch pedal. PROBLEM - there is only about 1 or 2 inches in which the clutch goes from fully engaged to fully disengaged - which is about 1/2 way down the stroke of the clutch pedal.  Essentially, there are only a couple of inches in the entire travel of the clutch pedal that affect engagement or disengagement. When driving, I am forced to push the pedal down only about halfway to change gears, in order to have anything close to a smooth shift, although I have to push it all the way down to get it into gear when stopped. While I am driving, I find it near impossible to have a smooth shift without a "clunk" in the drivetrain because of the short engage/disengage stroke. I simply CANNOT shift gears smoothly. There is always the  "clunk" from the drivetrain when I shift.  My fear is either a clutch R&R job -or- a rear end problem.

PLEASE HELP - ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Hmm, this is a hard one without having the vehicle in front of me to drive.

This could be the clutch just engaging quicker because of the adjustments made.  or it could be something down the driveline.  Be it the rear end, or a u-joint.  Or possibly something in the transmission itself.  Or it's just the synchros having to work more since the clutch isn't fully disengaging.  Is the clunk there if you press the pedal all the way down while changing gears?

It only clunks when I attempt to let the clutch out. I can't seem to do it smoothly without the clunk especially going form 1st to 2nd gear. I have adjusted the clutch several times to try to find the "sweet spot" if there is one, but ti doesn't seem to be there. I got under the cat to see if there was any slop in the drivetrain by yanking and trying to yank the driveshaft and rotate it but it was very tight - if that could tell me anything.

Anyway, that's all I can say - still baffled. I plan to take it into my very trusted mechanic today and leave it. I'll let y'all know what I find out.

Thanks.

Be sure the system is bled completely, if there is a dampner in this system, there should be a bleeder screw on it. You should have about a 1/2 inch free-play at the top of the pedal stroke.
