Help me fix this engine before I screw it up, I put timing chains on the 2.4 eng. The bottom one is right, the engine on TDC #1, after installing the lower chain, the mark on the upper sprocket for the cams is not where you can line up the mark for the chain to the cams. Do I rotate it around till #1 comes up again or do I move it just enough to put the cam chains on their marks. Book says tdc #1, but it doesn't say to go around again or if it's suppose to line up on the same turn as the lower chain. I did it wrong, I now have the engine at TDC#1 and the balancer and dist. are right, the cams are not. Also, if I turned this engine over with the key and it was not right, is that enough to bend the valves?

DO NOT ROTATE THE CRANK!!!! Are you absolutely sure you
are
on DTC #1 all the valves are closed for #1 cyl???The
mating
mark for the crank gear should be @the 4 o'clock
position-
the upper large gear mating mark @ the 2 o'clock
position-
with both int and ex valves closed on #1 the secondary
chain mating marks should be: bottom gear= 5 o'clock
:pass
side gear= 10 o'clock - drivers side gear 2 o'clock. The
important thing is to have the mating marks line up with
the chain and gears, for instance the top marks on the
secondary chain should be a different color than the
lower
mark. This info is from All-data not Nissan service
manual
which would give better pictures. Keep me posted. If
needed, rotate the cams to position carefully until
resistance is felt, meaning STOP, the valve is touching a
piston. The secret is, is to have it on TDC before you
take it apart.

frontier guy, I know we got the bottom chain right, balancer points correct and distributor is correct. If I have it at TDC #1 compression stroke, can I undo the cams and set them to the right position? we did an overhaul on rings , bearings etc. I did not feel resistance other than compression. I have not got top cover off of the front of eng. yet. but will on Friday. If I turned the key and it turned over trying to start it., is that automatic valves bending?

You should be able to turn the cams(may have to turn in the
opposite direction) to align the marks. It is very possible
there is valve damage if crank turned and not the cams.

Frontierguy,
Thanks for the information, I don't know why i didn't get it right the first time, I guess I didn't read my book close enough, but I went by your information, and put it together and we got it running and I did not damage any valves. But the truck is running good now. Thank you.
Roger

Well I'm in need of some help as well with my timing on my 1998
frontier most of the pictures on the net show the timing for the double
chain. My problem was that I didn't mark the old chain and lost the
right setup also I pulled out my oil pump and lost my distributor
settings. But I got the truck running again. It's is timed right from the
distributor with the timing light but when I'm on the gas the intake is
loud and it doesn't pull like It should. I think my mating marks or my
upper chain between to two cams are off. Does anyone know exactly
how to lign up the marks on the ka24de simplex cam?
Also it seems like the notch for the cams should be straight up for the
valves to close.

There are marks on the cams and the chains that should
match up when on TDC #1. It's not rocket science.
