I'm running into a brake answer that I am having trouble figuring out. I've
also had two mechanics take a shot at it, still no luck. I've found a few
other people post on other forums that they are having a similar
sounding issue, if not the same issue, but no solutions so far.
First, the problem. When I'm coming to a stop, just before a full stop
(around 3 mph) the brake pedal makes an audible 'pop' and pushes my
foot back, allowing the brakes to slip for a split second, then the car
stops like normal. After I am at a full stop, the broke will continue to do
this pop and push about once a second, almost like the ticking of a clock,
and it slowly fades away after 5-10 pops.
Now to cross out some of the possibilities. My first thought was ABS, then
I quickly found out my truck has no ABS. Then I had a mechanic say I
should change the brake booster. I did this, but I still had the initial pop
before the full stop, it did however make the pops that used to occur
after every time I came to a full stop, now only occur once in a while, with
seemingly no trend in the times it does it and does not do it. I had a
second mechanic lift it up and thoroughly look over and grease the
suspension and bearings but saw nothing of note there.
Now we're at a stand still. Any ideas?
Please do not respond with ABS as I already mentioned my truck does not
have it.
Also, please do not respond with rotors as it happens while I am stopped
and only happens once while the vehicle is actually moving and it is a very
present jolt. Also, they have been looked over by a mechanic.
By the way, it's a 1998 Frontier, 2wd 4cyl w/ 166k miles.

If I were you, I would just start replacing stuff. Start
with the easiest/cheapest parts to replace. Thats what I
usually do with a weird problem like this.
Since you already replaced the booster and you don't have
ABS, I'd go with the calipers next. Then maybe any
portioning valves. If neither of those work, then go to the
master cylinder.
Are you losing brake fluid??

So far no fluid is leaking. The mechanic I am currently working with and I
bother think it must be something that either rotates or is designed to fire
for some reason on a consistent basis (due to it's very consistently timed
pops). Do you agree with this? and if so, what would do something like that.

I agree with that. The only thing I can think of would be
ABS that would do anything rythmically.but u don't have
that. I know the brake booster works with vacuum from the
engine, maybe try looking for any leaks or blockages in
the connections and hoses from the engine to the brake
booster.

will do. I already gave it a glance over but do not have any tools to measure
for leaks.

Make sure the caliper pins and pads are free to move with
no binding or sticking, also make sure the rear wheel
cylinders are not frozen or sticking(push in on the piston
to verify movement.)
