I have a 1998 Frontier 4x4 with 4 cylinder, 5 speed, and 4.63 differentials (I think)
I have a bad ring and pinion. Dealer replaced all carrier bearings but did not fix the loud whining noise when under power. I am not willing to pay exhorbitant dealer price to replace ring and pinion since their expertise to date has been quite suspect.
I located a 2001 Frontier 4x4 rear axle assembly in local junk yard that the junk yard states as 4.63. However, the differential has a removable rear inspection plate where mine does not. Therefore, I doubt that I can interchange only the diff stump/pumpkin.
My thought is to simply transplant the entire 2001 axle assembly into my 1998 Frontier.
Is this a simple transplant? Any difficulties that I might encounter?
Thanks in advance for any direction or help you might provide.
