I was wondering what the professional technicians use to gauge the timing belt on the 04 Frontier,  VG33E. Its about time to service the timing belt and I want to do the job right. Thank you for your time.

frontierguy.

I have never done this job before so I have no reference of how the belt should feel and I do not want the belt going on.me before 100k like my dads pathfinder did to him, twice and he had to rebuild the engine both times. I'm  too poor for that and I dont skimp on any engine work that I do, if anyone has any info they would share I would greatly appreciate it.

1st why did dad need to rebuild his engine, never seen any
valve damage from a broken belt.
2nd with the new belt on, you should be able to twist the
belt 90 degrees between the 2 cam sprockets. If it is too
tight it will sing, too loose it will rattle. Like I said
before, I do it by feel, but I've done hundreds of them.
Maybe try a google search for someone who has a better
description and pictures.

Sorry for the late reply, I had a research paper to complete and by the time summer classes were over I had forgotten to reply to this thread. My dad had to rebuild because he was on the highway doing about 70 mph when the belt went, he said the engine just died on him without warning. The second time I believe was on the highway as well so I am not sure if an engine going at about 2.5 to 3K rpm will maintain proper enough timing not to bend every valve in the engine with no timing belt. Since I am not a professional mechanic, I do not even consider myself to be a shade tree mechanic, I can not confidently say what exactly the cause was but my dad has worked on everything from heavy diesel to compact foreign sports cars since before I was born, 33 years ago, I am going with what he says and that as far as he can figure it was his speed that destroyed the valves.

Thanks Don S, I have seen this already and plan to use it to help me along if I get stuck.
