Here is the Saga. We have a 2002 crew cab auto 6cyl non-
turbo. Went to start the truck the other day, could only
hear clicking, the truck would not turn over. Tried
jumping the battery, no go. Put trickle charger on the
battery overnight, charger indicated the battery was bad.
We took the battery to Pep boys, where they tested it,
and it showed it was fine. We took it back tried to jump
the truck again, nothing, so we got a new battery. Put
in the new battery, the truck would not start. Thought
it might be the solenoid, and then we discovered you
cannot replace that without replacing the whole starter.
Removed starter, took to auto parts place where they
tested and determined the starter was bad. Put in Chinese made rebuilt starter. Truck did not start.
Replace with another Chinese rebuilt, still nothing.
Then we returned that and went to NAPA and got a new
starter and installed, now the at least the truck is back
to clicking, at least until we hit the lock button on the
truck, in which case the whole thing went DEAD.

We have checked fuses all appear to be fine. We are not
mechanics, just unemployed and fairly broke. Our hope is
that someone can help us track down the problem.

So yesterday evening, everything was dead. Put the
battery charger back on the battery (it showed charged
last night while the truck acted like it wad dead) and
this morning, when the key is put in, all lights are on,
the radio plays. we have not attempted to start it,
because the short or what ever it is remains.

Terminals look good, no obvious wear and tear, it is an
aftermarket stereo, but is has been in the truck 2 years
now. No recent additions to the electrical system other
than that.

Thanks in advance to anyone for their assistance

Inspect the battery terminals very carefully for any
corrosion, etc. Also check the ground cable from the
battery to the engine, remove and clean contact area. Have
you tried jumping the starter solenoid wire to the
positive post?

we did try to power the starter directly from the positive terminal and that did not work.

will check the ground cable.

Just wanted to give the solution...Turns out to be the
battery terminal connectors. Looks can be deceiving.
