Hello all. Just registered and I hope this is the appropriate place to post.

I bought an '04 XE V6 4X4 in 2006 with 36,000 miles. It's now near 105,000 and my wife suggested maybe I should think about trading it in while it still only has minor problems. The transmission occasionally jerks while cruising downhill ~40 MPH. There's a horrible scraping noise when I first move after engaging the 4WD. There's a rattling underneath (only downhill over potholes) that no mechanic has seemed to figure out, which I think has something to do with the shocks/springs (definitely not the spare tire, skid plate, muffler, etc.). I have never beat on the truck but I do haul flooring and firewood on occasion. The KBB trade-in is $8,000 and I might want to take advantage now but I'm also hesitant in this economy (I am a part-owner of a small business and just paid the truck off 8 months ago).

Based on your experience with problems with age and the overall value of the truck, do you guys think I should I ride it out or would this be a good time to start looking?

You are due for a timing belt if it hasn't been done, also
spark plugs. Along with coolant service, fuel filter, front
wheel bearing repack, drive belts if needed, trans service,
etc. etc. How is it for rust seeing you are in the
wonderful NE with all the crap salt on the roads. Does the
scraping noise continue, or just when you start to move?
May have an auto hub that is failing. The rattling could be
the wraps on the rear springs????

Thanks for the advice.  After further contemplation we decided (and overlooked the fact) that it's definitely time for a tuneup.  Underneath is a bit rusty and I suppose I could go through more car washes but the only problem was simply the clipping of the muffler bracket.  The scraping is only at first and we intend to roll up on the ramps pretty soon as far as the rattling goes.  Anyway, thanks again.
