I did some trans work on the SC (Auto) and had the drive shaft off.  I did not mark the shaft.  I found a white paint mark on the LSD differential input shaft yoke but none on the Drive shaft.  I noticed that at the rear of the drive shaft just before the yoke for the u-joint there is a oval mark stamped (looks like a large pill about 1") on the round shaft. Could that be an alignment mark? I don't feel any thing except when I go about 30-40 mph there is a vibration that feels like I have ribs on the contact part of the tire like wire snow chains but lighter. I can hear this too like a hum coming from the rear. The u-joints seem tight and do not notice anything while going highway speeds.

Handy,
always mark a drive shaft before removing. try unbolting
from the diff and spin it 180 degrees and bolt it back up.

How does the factory know which way to bolt the drive shaft on?  There must be some mark or it does not matter.  Isn't the drive shaft balanced?  I wonder why they would put the Pill looking mark on the shaft at that end of the shaft. Somebody has to know what they use at the factory to get it aligned or it does not mater.

It does matter, it is just one of those things that has
escaped my memory(along w/ a million other things) that
doesn't matter to me because I mark before removing. Back
in the early 80's there was a bulletin describing how and
where to add hose clamps to the drive shaft to help balance
them.
