I need some advice regarding my 2000 Nissan Frontier.  About a month ago I had the clutch kit replaced.  My truck had reached a point of being EXTREMELY difficult to shift into gear, and the clutch pedal was almost all the way to the floor.  I paid $729 for parts and labor.  Of course, I'm now being told that this was a little pricey.  My truck is now doing the EXACT SAME THING.  I called the guy (recommended by the girl @ O'Reillys) back and he said to bring it back out and they'd look at it.  He said that it's probably the master cylinder that needs to be replaced.  I told him that I wasn't trying to be a smart aleck, but shouldn't he have caught that the first time around.  Of course he told me "no." So, I guess my first question is, should he have caught it when he replaced the clutch kit? I really know nothing about auto mechanics.  But common sense tells me that if you know there are several different things that it could be, wouldn't you check them all out before you declare what exactly is the problem and fix it?? Secondly, can someone give me a "guestimate" on how much it SHOULD cost (parts & labor) to replace the master cylinder?

Any other suggestions are welcome, too.  I'm a do-it-yourself kind of girl, and this whole situation sure does make me want to go learn auto mechanics.......

Thanks!!

What was the original concern, hard to get into gear or
slipping clutch? 4WD is 8.4 hrs. for clutch, 2wd is 6.3
hrs., parts prices vary as to what was used, after market
or Nissan. It is best to replace both the master and slave
cyls. at the same time, which is what you need to correct
your current concern. After re-reading your post, Yes, he
should have caught this the first time. Was the clutch
slipping at all prior? I would look around for a competent
technician or buy a repair manual and have at it.

"4WD is 8.4 hrs. for clutch"
To frontierguy:

Are you telling me that removing both shifting levers, both drive-shafts, torsion bars + cross-member, rusted exhaust, starter, the hard to get crankshaft sensor, transmission out, remove and install release bearing, remove pressure plate, remove-resurface-reinstall flywheel, remove and install pilot bearing, and put all these back can be done in 8.4 hours? And my shop asked for $600 in labor!!!

It took me about 40 hours in my own garage. Truth is it would probably take me less second time (not that I plan to ever do it again).

Back in the day, the 95 trucks had a concern with a noisy
pilot bushing, warranty time paid 7.2 hours for the repair,
on a bad day I would do one in 2.5 hrs!!!! And that
included a donut break in the middle of it. Proper tools
and experience are invaluable!

Thanks for all the info.  I ended up getting it done (not that I had much of a choice) for $192.  This included parts and labor.  I was just a little agitated that I was spending almost $1000, in a months time, on my truck.  But considering I've had very few problems (and nothing major until now) with it, I'll be grateful.  Glad to know there's somewhere that I can go to get advice about my Frontier, though.
