No, it's not coming from me. I checked that. When I accelerate, particularly in cold weather, my 2001 Nissan Frontier SE 2.4L 2WD makes a little groaning noise in 1st and 2nd gears, it seems, and then once I'm up to highway speed it goes away completely. The car shifts normally -- no lurching like you might expect if the timing belt or tensioner or transmission was going bad. I looked under the truck to see if maybe there was a hole in the exhaust system or something that might make a loose groaning/rattling noise but can't find anything. Last mechanic I went to for new tires suggested it was time to change all the belts (never been changed; 125K miles). It's definitely NOT a squealing or squeaking sound. I'm thinking I'm going to just drain and replace the transmission fluid to see if that does anything, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Sorry to jump in on a already stared subject but this is
the closest to my problem that i thought i could find
help on. So fellas, i recently changed my oil and went to
5w-30 since it's winter time (i always ran 10w-30) and
noticed more spots appearing on my driveway so i parked further fwd than usual and waited a while then went and
looked under my truck and noticed a small oil spot about
the size of a quarter from when i parked earlier (witch
was about 6 hrs) coming from right behind my oil pan
where the transmission begins. Now I've called around to
some of my more advanced mechanic friends and the advise
they give is to run some lucas oil treatment and thicker
weight oil until I have the money to replace the rear
main seal. My truck is sittin at 198xxx and i caint bring
myself to get rid of it and funds are short. Any advise?
I really need some help guys!!!
Thanks!

Boatbuilder306,
with the trans in neutral and engine idling, push clutch
pedal to the floor and see if the noise changes(decreases),
release the clutch pedal and see if the noise increases. If
this produces results, it is most likely bearings starting
to fail in the trans.

tatorbob,
why don't you just start your own post???? Along with the
rear main seal, there is a rear main seal retainer gasket
that is known to "suck-in" and produce a leak. Before I
would tear into that, I would take a good look (from below)
at the V/C gaskets, they will get very hard and crack,
causing a leak.

Thanks frontierguy! Oddly enough (regarding tatorbob's comment), I just switched to 20W-50 oil a couple of months before I noticed the sound. Noticed the oil was a little low today and added half a quart -- haven't driven it, yet. No leaks in driveway at all, though. Your suggestion sounds great except there is no clutch -- it's an automatic. Any other ideas?

Ok not sure this is THE happy ending, but after adding that amazing
stuff called OIL, my engine sounds much better. Suspect I didn't get an
accurate oil level reading during last oil change. Hoping that's all there
is to it but will chime back in with more groaning if that's not the case.

Sorry guys, when you mentioned 1st and 2nd gears, I
"assumed" manual, especially the way you described it. It's
very difficult when you are not able to experience the
concern in real life. And tatorbob , sorry also, but one
guys concern is a noise and yours is about a leak???????
Maybe I'm confused. Not to mention, I am not compensated
for all time I spend on this sight helping you guys out and
occasionally I make a bad judgement call after a hard days
work. Most of my facts are based on NTB's, Alldata info and
lot's of experience.

It's my fault for jumping in on the middle of the subject. I
just need to know if it's my rear main seal going out. It's
right behind the oil pan and start of the trans.
Thanks
