Hey guys - looking for a few pointers before I take my rig into the trans shop. I know a lot about a lot of things but... the guts of a modern day transmission are beyond me!
I've got an '06 Frontier SE 4x4 and here's the problem:
So, I get up to 55-65mph and the truck has shifted into overdrive. If I try to just drive along at a constant speed (no major adjustments to the throttle/accelerator) it feels like it bogs down (not drastically, just some hesitation) and doesn't want to down shift. I've noticed the tachometer slowly drops once it shift into OD also. If I get on the accelerator a bit more aggressively it seems to downshift properly however if I try to maintain a constant speed it will shudder briefly then downshift, which is accompanied by a pretty good thump sound. Not good - maybe Frontier Guy has seen these symptoms before? I'm trying to get an educated opinion before I take it in so I can avoid being ripped off.
Thanks!

Does it downshift in cruise control when set to 55-65 mph?
I am getting 2000 RPM at 65MPH...

Yep, it will downshift but with the same hesitation/jolt. I rarely use cruise control since I live in DC. I get about 2000 at 65mph as well, although when it starts hesitating it drops slowly to about 1800 until it finally clunks down a gear. Any ideas?

At 40 mph holding a steady throttle, does it feel like you
are driving over rumble strips? From what else you describe
, it sounds like coolant has contaminated the ATF. With the
engine cool, remove the coolant overflow cap and look for
pink, oily fluid in the coolant tank. There may be a lot or
sometimes it is barely noticeable. According to the tech
guys @ Nissan, it only takes a couple of tablespoons of
coolant to destroy the trans. Your warranty has been
extended for this concern, do a search.

Frontierguy - Yeah that's pretty much what it sounds like, although not usually happening at 40mph. I checked the coolant overflow reservoir - it was almost empty. I cleaned off a wooden dowel and dipped it in, hoping to be able to tell if there was ATF in there but there was only about 1cm of coolant in the reservoir. So, I filled it up to between the min/max lines. As for the warranty, I bought this truck from a dealer used. It has over 117k on it. I honestly don't remember the terms of the warranty - does it matter? Is there a recall on this problem or anything like that? It sounds like a fairly common problem.
Thanks for all your help!

The warranty is for 96 months/80K miles, it wouldn't hurt
to call Nissan, see if they can help you out at all.

My 2007 has had this problem since it was new. At 40 mph if I held it
at a constant speed at begin up a steep hill it will shutter like a Manuel
in to high of gear. I can turn the OD off or accelerate and it stops. The
dealer would always say they couldnt duplicate. It has been almost a
year since it has done it. I have 85000k on it now, I hope it's not
coolant in the transmission, but I'm sure going to check tomorrow. I
always just assumed the fifth gear was to high because Nissan was
trying to improve the gas mileage.

This tranny and AT fluid issue has been reported to the NHTSA last month...
Does anyone know how big the cooler is inside the radiator?
Per www.autoguide.com:
Hundreds of Xterra, Frontier, and Pathfinder owners have reported sudden jerking in their vehicles when travelling at highway speeds. The problem has been diagnosed as a failed transmission cooler which allows coolant to mix with the transmission fluid, causing internal damage to the components. Reports of the issue say that prior to the failure, the occupants noticed nothing amiss with the operation of the vehicle.
Despite hundreds of documented complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan still claims that there is no defect. In 2007, the company began to offer an extended warranty good for eight years or 80,000 miles on the transmission and radiator cooler. When the transmission failure occurred however, the company covered the price for the radiator assembly and not the internal damage done to the transmission.
Based on the number of complaints regarding the exact same issue, the result of this investigation will almost undoubtedly be a recall, although it seems Nissan is doing everything in its power to avoid such a circumstance.

davidbrady,
the cooler inside the rad is about 1 inch in diameter
about 12 inches in length.
