Hello everyone,
It has been a spell since I have posted a question to the forum, so here I go.
I have a 2000 Fronty, SE and a cover. Recently I had done the following to it:
Change brake calipers, pads and discs for the front.
Overhaul the rear drum brakes.
Change spark plugs & wires.
Change rotor and rotor cap.
Replace the fuel filter.
Changed oil and filter (Bosch filter, Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W-20).
Change all 4 tires to a bit more aggressive tire thread: Toyo Tires - Open Country A/T 255/65R16
Has been completely overhauled at 290k miles, I have 320k miles

A week or so after all of that was done, I am driving on I65 and started to feel like I am pulling a trailer, As an example, doing 80mph should reflect to
3k rpm's +-, I was doing 65mph and was up to 4k rpm's. So I puled to a side of the road facing down a light decline, put the car in Neutral and the truck
started to coast - roll down. It was not a very steep decline. Maybe like a driveway decline.

Now, this has happened on a few occasions, not all of the time. When just driving around the city, short distances it doesn't fell like I am pulling a trailer,
but it does feel weird. I had this truck since 2004, and I know when something is not quite right. (When starting to move after a light change, no matter
how gentle I used the gas pedal, it feels like it is struggling/chocking... It goes to about 4k rpm before it changes to the next up gear. It used to change
gears sooner and did not sound like it is straining).

Also, and I know there are many threads about this, but now gas mileage has decreased to a 10 mpg, from 14mpg in the summer. Regardless of the
octane or where it has been purchased ( Costco, Shell, Sam's.... etc)

I have taken the Fronty to a couple of mechanic shops, and they can't see anything wrong.

Connected the truck to a code reader just for giggles and grins, no codes were displaying.....

I am wondering what the mileage will be this winter, as historically mileage drops down 3 to 4 miles per gallons in the cold months.

Any and all suggestions, advise will be very much appreciated. Dont really want to replace my truck, I enjoy the simplicity of the 2000 year.

Thank you so much.

Sionis

Sionis,

I would suspect a Cat might be Clogged. Just a 1st Guess
on my part though.

I would get your Cat's Checked out Immediately. When they
start Clogging they can cause all sort's of problem's,
including engine damage.

If it were me,, I would take it to Nissan to get them
checked out. Doesn't mean that you have to let them do the
work,, but if you do,, they might have a source for less
expensive cat's or they might be able to send you to a
place that might save you some money.

Good Luck

Thank you so much. I think that I replaced either the Passenger
side or both of them about 2 to 3 years ago... Nevertheless,
given that they were after market parts, I will follow on your
advise and take it to Nissan.

Will keep you posted......

Again, thank you so much.

Scion,

Tell the Service Manager what the Truck is doing and You
really don't know what the problem is,, but it Might be a
Cat, but it might be something else though.

Hopefully it'll be something Simple and Hopefully The
Technician will be able to find the problem.

In a Case like this,, I would want one of the Nissan Master
Tech's that hopefully has experience with a Generation I
Nissan Truck.

IMO it's very important to get an Experienced Nissan Tech
with the Generation Truck that they are Trying to Diagnose.
Some of the Newer Younger Tech's might be more experienced
with the Gen II's or now the New Gen III's.

You might have to make a specific appointment with the
Master Tech that is Experienced with the Gen I Nissan
Truck's, before you actually take the truck in.

I say the thing's above, cause for me personally,, I want
it Diagnosed and Repaired Correctly the 1st Time if @ all
Possible.

From what you have said,, I know that you like your truck
and want to keep it as long as possible. I understand,,
cause I drove my 1st Nissan Truck, a '93 4cyl Hardbody for
20 year's. I purchased it Brand New and Still remember
takeing it for the Test Drive.   Over the year's,, our
Truck's become part of the Family.   It's just a machine,,
but I wonder how it's doing. I guess I'm too sentimental.

Thank you so much. I know exactly what you mean. 18 years I
have it, and it has been a very good truck. Several girlfriends,
but only one 2000 Nissan Frontier.

Not planing in selling it. Will buy another vehicle some time, but
there always will be a place in my garage for my Fronty. I will
contact my local Nissan dealer and ask for the most senior
experienced tech. (btw, what a great suggestion).

Will keep you posted......

Again, thank you so much.

Hello everyone....

Sorry for the delay, and Yes I have some interesting facts to share...

I took the Fronty to a Nissan dealership, and the cats are ok... hmmm while I was there, I saw a mechanic point a laser gun to the brakes of another car, so I
asked the mechanic why, and he said that he suspects that the brakes might be overheating… I saved that pearl of wisdom for later.

After a few days, I took the truck around town to run some errands, for giggles and grins I laser the disks and calipers (Yes, I did buy one of those thermos laser
guns) and these are the readings:
Driver side about 160 degrees
Passenger side about 340 degrees.

Contacted a friend that is a mechanic and he stated that just because the calipers are brand new, they are not fault free.
Had the R/H side caliper replaced and Viola!

I was happy as a clown, finally enjoying the Fronti, when today, I decided to run it thru the car wash, and wouldn’t you know it? The whole thing started all over
again: 65 mph at over 3K rpm’s. It should be 80 mph at 3k rpm…

As you can imagine I am flummoxed (what kind of word is that?) Don’t understand how or why a Car wash would make the truck to start acting all over again….
Got the truck washed, got on the Interstate, and as soon as I started trying to get speed to merge I felt the familiar force trying to slow me down….

So, there it is… and again: advise, suggestion, ideas…..I am getting to the point that I might start doing some voodoo with chickens and goats…. LOL…

Sion,

Well as you suspected the Brake's seem to be Dragging.

My advice is to get the Dragging Fixed ASAP and Don't
Drive the Truck till they are fixed.

A Dragging Brake,, cause's Heat to Build up on the Rotor
and the Brake's. This Heat Build Up can Transfer by
Metal Part's to a Seal that can get Too Hot and cause
leakage if there is an Oil Cavity. Also the Heat can
also cause the Wheel Bearing's to OverHeat, Scald the
Grease and Therefore result in Wheel Bearing's needing to
be Replaced. Also the Excess Heat can cause the Rotor to
Warp, which will result in a Pulsateing of the Brake's as
they are Applied.

Hopefully none of the above has happened at this point,
but it didn't help by driveing it with a Dragging Brake.

Maybe a protective Shield has been removed and not
replaced to protect the Caliper Pin's from Water
Intrusion ~ Just a Wild Guess, but something is
preventing the Brake Pad from backing off from the Rotor.

Again Might be Best to Have Nissan Look at this and see
if there is any missing protective Shield's and Try to
get this Fixed Correctly, before more damage is done.

Regards,

Hello Ruble,
Thank you for your feedback. I will take the Fronty back to the
dealer... Another 150.00 for their diagnosis.... I really need to
get this issue resolved soon…

Anyway, when I have something to report I will keep this thread
updated.

Regards,

Regards,

Sion,

It's a Delima when our Truck's get older and more
Maintenance/Repair's become necessary.

That's one of the big Reason's that I do as much of my
Preventative Maintenance and Repair's Myself to save as
much money as I can. But when it come's to a Repair that
I'm not Comfortable With, I usually take mine to Nissan
in an Effort to get it Fixed Right the 1st Time. The
Charge's are usually more for Nissan to do the Repair,,
but I have more confidence in them doing it Right.
Nissan make's mistake's Too Though,, so there is no
Guarantee, but I just Trust Nissan More to get it Right
the 1st Time.

I would for sure get them to check out the Wheel
Bearing's and Axle Seal's for Leakage, so you'll at least
know what's going on,, whether you get them fixed or not.

I would for sure check the level of the Rear Axle Oil to
make sure that it has plenty of Oil in there and if it
hasn't been changed out on Schedule, I would change it
out,, unless maybe there is a leaking Seal,, in which the
Thicker Oil allready in there Might slow down the
leakage. If there is a leakage,, I Might opt to add an
Additive to the Rear Axle Oil to help prevent the
leakage. If Lucas has an Additive,, I would probly go
with Lucas, as I trust them more.

Thinking on this more,, it might be that the Rotor is
allready Warped and causeing the Brake's to remain in
Partial Contact, causeing heat to build up; Again just
another Wild Guess. If the Rotor is Warped, you would
probably get Pulsateing Brake's when applied comeing to a
Stop.

Nissan also has an Economy Part's Option,, so that might
be an option if you Let Nissan do the Repair. I would
try to get an estimate beforehand if you're thinking
about Nissan doing the Repair.

Maybe it won't be too bad on the Cost,, but Your Truck is
now 22 year's old, so I would expect the cost to be more
than I would Like, but if the Fix is Good,, then I would
probly think that it was worth it in the Long Run. At
any rate,, with the Cost of a New Truck being So High
Now,, it might be money well Spent.

On a Different Note,, I just heard that California is
Banning Sale's of New Car's that run on Gas, starting in
2035.   I sure hope I don't have to buy an Electric
Pickup Truck. I just Trust Gasoline Engine's more than I
Trust an Electric Motor Powered by a Batry.

Here's hopeing that all goes Good.
