Just finished a 1550 mile trip in the 2007 Fronty (extended cab, 4 WD).  I left central PA last week with my wife and about 350 pounds of stuff in the truck.  We went to Washington DC where we put about 80 miles on driving in the DC suburban traffic.  Then on to Wilson NC.  From there, over to western NC near Asheville.  On that entire trip, I ran high test (Shell V power) and averaged 23.0 mpg at a speed of about 63 mph on the interststes. That included the DC suburban driving.  Today, I ran the whole way home at 70-72 mph and averaged just over 20 mpg.   Speed does hurt mileage.  But I was trying to get home before Hurricane Sandy hit and damaged anything.

I did air up the Cooper Discoverer CTS tires to 38 psi before leaving on the trip.  I was quite satisfied with the performance and mileage.  Truck now has about 48,000 miles on it.

Boomer,
I wish I had your right foot, mine is way too heavy!!!!
Have you ever added Startron to your tank before taking a
trip? That is supposed to increase MPG's.

Never used Startron but I have used Lucas fuel additive.  has no effect in the Frontier but adds about 2-3 mpg in my wife's Saturn.

I just set the cruise control and let it roll along.  I used to drive a lot faster than I do now but retirement has mellowed me and lightened my foot!  But I have no complaints about the way the truck handled or drove.  For a heavy "brick" moving through the air, it did a great job.

Boomer, have you had the 2 degree timing advance done to
your truck?

No.  I have never had that done.  I have done a lot of study in the first year or so of ownership and with my truck, I found that the cost per mile is lowest on premium gas.  Using regular dropped the mileage QUITE significantly, from about 23 mpg to almost 18.  And the loss of power was easily felt.  I do not get any pinging on hi test and perhaps it would tolerate an additional 2 degrees of advance.  Do dealers do this?

Yes, dealers are the only ones that can do it. If you have
a good relationship with your dealer, I'm sure they will do
it for a small fee, it only takes a few minutes. Most don't
want to be bothered. I'm not "in tune" enough to see the
difference in hi-test and regular gas(only in my wallet),
but I did notice a significant change after installing the
Dynomax "Y-pipe" and Dynomax VT muffler(the stock "Y" is
very restrictive). PS and it sounds great!

Wouldn't the timing have to be set back to stock settings when the vehicle is smogged?

I don't know why, but then again you are talking about Ca.,
that's a whole different "country".

That is an interesting point.  I know where I live in PA, there is a required emissions check where they plug into the port inside the car and everything is read by an external computer.  I don't know if it would pick up a timing change from factory settings but it would not surprise me. Usually, if there is no check engine light, you pass, but there are instances where something is stored in the computer that can make you fail, as I understand it.

Like you say, they are looking for emission failures, I
don't think 2 degrees of timing will bother.
