Being a Toyota employee, I bet it was a tough choice between the Frontier and Tacoma. I was faced with the same dilema back in '05. Toyota wouldn't bulge on their sticker prices so I looked at the Frontier and amazed of the bargain I paid for the little beast. The seats are that of a full sized pu and built tough. Even after owning it for less than a year, was rear-ended by a Pontiac Formula Firebird doing 60 mph. Completed totalled the Firebird and the only damage to my truck was the reat bumber and driver side quarter panel. Though I had 850 pounds of bagged concrete, the Frontier held it's own. You don't hear allot about the toughness of the frame. Heck even the tailgate is solid and heavy.
I'm at the choice again of buying a new truck and pitted up against the Tacoma Prerunner and Frontier extra cab models. I just don't care for the seats sitting on the floor of the Tacoma but the gas mileage seems to be better from the 2.7 versus that of the 2.5 Frontier.
I read articles that Toyota will be redisigning the Tacoma for 2014 as well as Nissan for the next Frontier with improved gas mileage so I may hold off until late 2013 to see what improved changes are in store.
