I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier XE Ext Cab/4x2.  I am experiencing an electrical problem.  I'm driving and all of a sudden truck begins to shimmie, jump like its going to run out of gas, and then it just comes to a total stop.  Unable to start the truck or jump the truck.  Battery is dead and will not carry a charge.  I replace the battery and then it does it again.  I have ruined 3 batteries and cannot find a short or reason why this happens.  In the meantime I am getting a flashing red light inidicating air bag needs servicing.  Can air bag servicing cause this kind of electrical nuetralization of a 12v battery?  Has anyone encountered this problem?  Each time I take the truck to be worked on I am told that I need to change the alternator.  Ive done this twice now and still have the problem.

dean;

You need to look for an electrical short. I think you turn off all electical stuff then disconect one battery post then read how much currant is flowing across the battery post to the disconnected battery cable. It should be a very small amout. When the battery dies the fuel pump quits and you don't go any farther.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

The finance people that offered the variable rate mortgages that the taxpayers are going to have to pay off should be put in jail. And the poor souls that  got them need to take an IQ test… Are you smarter than a fifth grader? What a scam!

Ok.  I will do that.  Just bought the Haynes Repair Manual so I will begin tracking this down.  Appreciate the tip about the fuel pump.  Makes sense now.

So once i put my mulitmeter in series (multimeter in between the post of the battery and the cable).... THen what? If the car is off, i should have no voltage and no current correct? if the car is on, i should be reading....?

Could you give me a few more steps i should maybe follow to see if i have a short?

What am i looking for that will alert me that i have a short in the system?

Please don’t let me hog this thread…

Electrical garbage is my weak point. There are a few things electrical that run even when you’ve turned every thing off. If there is …say over an 8th of an amp flowing then the battery isn’t going to keep a charge very long … note! I’m just guessing. Even with out a problem my ’99 Grand Cherokee could lose a charge in two weeks if it was parked that long.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Globalization is a Corporate / Political plan designed to reduce the American blue collar worker to the lower standards of living of the third world blue collar workers.
