I have a 1998 Frontier, I have a real bad squeele coming from the egine compartment. I think it might be the AC Compressor. It squeeles only when I have the AC on. It blows cold it doesn't seem to happen when the setting in the truck is on low, so far. What would be the best way to know for sure if this is the problem. Just so I don't have to spend alot to get it fixed. The clutch seems to be working just fine also.

Does it squeal constantly, or does it only happen sometimes for short times? If happens only for short times, its probably the belt getting loose.

When it happens we let off the gas right away, and turn the ac off right away. And then it stops. The guy I bought it from said that he had the belt done not to long ago. I feel that the belt are tight enough. But how do you tighten the ac belt.

The tensioner pulley is under the truck. I changed my belts yesterday. Loosen the nut on the pulley it self just a bit, then tighten the bolt that the pulley attaches to on the bracket it will tighten the belt. Since the belt has been slipping so much, i would replace it... BUT that would require removing the other 2 belts. Just try tightening it first, see if that helps.
See if the belts are genuine nissan belts. I bought other belts, and they weren't the exact right size.

I don't know how much you know about engines and ACs, so I'll assume you don't know much. I don't mean to insult your intelligence, i'm just explaining whats going on.
When you turn your AC on it engages the AC's compressor. The compressor is bolted to the side of the engine and it get its power from the engine by a belt. While the AC is on, the compressor cycles on and off. There is a clutch on the front of the compressor that makes it go on and off. When the engine is running, the belt is spinning. When you turn the AC on (or when it cycles on), the clutch engages the compressor (which is not moving) with the belt (which is moving at the speed of the engine). If the belt is loose, it will rub on the pulley of the compressor until it gets up to speed...thats the squealing you are hearing.
Its probably not the AC itself. When an AC goes out, it usually won't give much warning. Unless you have a leak in the system, then the temp of the cold air it blows will warm up over time.
BTW, Which engine do you have 4 or 6?

Belts manufacturer honestly doesntly really matter unless your getting some off the wall in a dollar store... LOL. Goodyear gatorbacks are a good belt, but a little on the spendy side.
If the tension is fine, then just check to see how it looks. If it looks like it has a glaze on the contact portions, replace it. This will cause your squeel. Also, if the AC belt wasn't replaced with the others, it could be old and worn out. Look for tons of dry rot cracks.
If the belt is newer like the others, then have a friend sit inside the cab and turn on the AC while you sit outside and watch the pulley engage. If you still get a squeel and the belt is moving the pulley just fine, my best bet would be the bearings are going out in the AC pulley. Some squirts of WD40 or other lubricant into the top portion of the clutch area will help it, but is NOT a fix. Don't just spray either, as it will get everywhere, even on the belt. Short controlled bursts, around 5 should do it. Start up again and see if the squeel is gone or diminished. If it is, start looking at having the pulley replaced.

Yeah I think it is an ac problem. When I drive I can feel the ac turn on and off in the engine. It pulls a little but not much. You would have to expect it to happen in order to notice the jerk. Thanks if you know of any cheep compressor I am all ears.
