alright, heres the deal. I have a 2004 frontier 3.3 2wd automatic. I bought the truck used with 43k about a year ago. installed a 3 inch lift, exhuast system, tires and some other fun stuff.. put 21,000 of beating the piss out of it with no issues. I change the oil every 4,000 with fully synthetic oil and a k&n oil filter. have a 2 row radiator vs the stock 1 row. so basically i take car of my engine.

anyways, i put 15 bucks worth of gas in and drove it about 20 miles tonight, light rain, and progressivly it started surging when i was full throttle from a dead stop. it looks like from the passangers point of view as if i was purpusfully doing it with throttle. and on the highway it has plenty of power and doesnt surg at all when it kicks down.

im hoping its becuase of bad gas or of the rain getting in some place it shouldnt be. but who knows. PLEASE HELP! any input is greatly appreciated

Fuel pump failing?  Fuel filter almost totally clogged? Water in the gas (unlilely with 10% ethanol acting as dry gas)?

..

Welcome to the group!...

I had the same reaction after fueling up in the rain but there was a tanker there putting fuel in the under ground tanks. Barely made it to work and back home! Driving kept the fuel and water mixed enough to barely keep the engine running.

... I pulled the drain plug on the fuel tank and caught a half a quart of water. This was before 10% Ethanol. I’m guessing the Ethanol would mix the water into the gas better.

Did the check engine lite come on?  Possible water in fuel, MAFS, (are you using a Genuine Nissan oil impregnated air filter), or  fuel filter(in line along frame rail-not in the tank like 05 and up).

thanks man, its cool bein around guys who love nissan too! haaha

the check engine light is NOT on! thats what makes me kinda mad! lol it comes on when everythings fine but WONT when there really is somthing wrong..

im using fully sythetic castrol syntec 5w-30, and a K&N oil filter every 4k. i have the full cold air intake system off of it right now and the stock system with a K&N stock replacment.

the only thing that contridicts water being in the gas is that it ive used different gas station now putting in $5 at a time of different versions of 92 and 87 octane.(just to see if somthing was in the 87 and not the 92..

BUT it could just be sitting on the bottom of my tank.

so there is a gas tank DRAIN PLUG???? cause if there is ima do that RIGHT now.

i really hope its somthing as simple as bad gas..

There is no drain in the fuel tank, did away with them years ago. I would remove the fuel filter, drain it into a clear container to see if any H2O is in it. AS far as the K&N, they flow a lot of air, also a lot of dirt! Look at one real close, do a search on K&N test. Stick with the Genuine Nissan oil impregnated filter. Also, run your finger across the screen on the MAFS to see how much dirt is getting by the filter.

Yup!

When I drained my tank it was a '76 Datsun Pick up.

Never even looked at the tanks on my '95 Hard Body or '99 Frontier.

found the problem! what actually happend was kinda funny.. my left motor mount broke some how and that was causing my engine to tourqe to the right only in "high tourqe" situations, and "stretching" my intake tube between the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor. it had an almost completly around crack so you couldnt see it when the engine was not under tourqe/moving it around yourself. thus surging only off the line.

put the cold air intake system back on and a new motor mount!

call it a day!

talk about random. i was changing my oil when i noticed it.
