I've got a 2001 Desert Runner with 102K. All dash gauges stopped working and 1 day after I went up a hill and it started chugging. Mechs replaced throttle cable sensor, but it did it again. Then they put in a new distributor and it still does it. Gauges work intermittently and no idiot light comes on. They can't recreate the problem in the shop (no load?)so it's a crap shoot. It revs up fine in N, so they ruled out the fuel pump. Do I go to the dealer and get screwed, or has this happened to anyone else? My guys are stumped.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

MAFS??????? Is the Check engine lite on????? What makes you think the dealer will screw you? Ask them to diagnose it up to an hour if needed, then you can decide what to do. Have you been using a Genuine Nissan oil impregnated air filter???  There is also a recall for corrosion at the fuel sender unit, it can create an intermittent concern untill it fails completely, then the fuel pump will not run at all.

Thanks for the input, Frontierguy. I'll mention the recall thing. They think it may be the Air Flow Sensor. If it's not, I go to the dealer. No check engine light comes on, so it's really hard to say what's up. I'll check the air filter, too.
I'll post what I find out.

When is the last time you checked and/or replaced the fuel filter?

Good point Boomer!! Fuel filter is serviceable on an '01. MAFS is the Air Flow sensor.

Hey, Boomer and Frontier Guy! Okay- here's the deal- they replaced the Air Flow sensor and are driving it 100 miles today and tomorrow. If it's gonna act up, it'll do it then. They did rule out the fuel filter on the grounds that the problem is intermittent and that it revs up just fine in neutral. Is that logical to assume the gauges failing is related? That is intermittent as well and coincides with the chugging. I also mentioned the recall thing to them. Time will tell.
I want my truck back! It's sweet- I'll post some pics when it's home again.
You guys are great- thanks for responding.

You know, I wonder if you have a problem with an electrical ground?  Make sure all of the lines going to the battery are tight and that ground connections to the body/frame are good and free of corrosion.  Sometimes a bad ground will produce symptoms like you have.

Hi, all-
Just got my truck back from Nissan here in Austin, TX. Circuit board problem in the instrument cluster. If the gauges don't work, it can't tell how fast it's going, hence the chugging. My mechanics had a hunch that was it from the beginning, but didn't have the diagnostic equipment to nail it down. It was less than $500 and I got it back in 3 days!
Thanks again for all the input!

Carpenterchick, glad to hear you are back on the road!!!  Electrical gremlins are a pain and in modern vehicles with lots of solid state stuff, they can be a MAJOR pain!

Glad you found the board useful and thanks for sharing your fix.  It might help others.
